NCEL- Game 14
12/10/24 - Swallownest vs Wombwell Town
With a first league defeat still stinging the Wellers, there was extra incentive to get back to winning way - apart from to help celebrations for manager and birthday boy Karl Rose. The game got off to a slow start with neither side really producing in front of goal, but the game turned on 18 minutes as Josh Nodder tried from distance and was denied by the fingertips of Ollie Sykes. More pressure came a minute later as Jordan Kershaw crossed for Gav Allott to head towards goal. The ball looked to be going wide and at full stretch Danny Youel tried to re-direct into the empty net, only to watch the ball fly up onto the crossbar and away from goal instead. Owen Sykes, playing in the unusual position of centre back was still a danger with his throw ins and on 21 minutes a throw was half cleared back to the path of Sykes who curled an effort just past Swallownest's left post. Still searching for the opening goal, Kershaw tried his luck, but was denied by a block and his follow-up effort from Nodder's pass went over. It really was one-way traffic as Allott, Youel and Nodder all shot wide, before Swallownest had an effort themselves with Alex Wonham firing wide across goal with their best effort of the half. SFC 0, WTFC 0. Swallownest's Sykes came up big on 51 minutes as he denied Allott following Wellers' Sykes cross from the left, but the keeper was on borrowed time. On 62 minutes Nodder picked the ball up on the right hand side and cut inside, taking on three men before firing with his left foot from 20 yards. This time the keeper's hand wasn't strong enough and the ball found the back of the net. Allott's last action of the game almost produced a second goal as his effort from inside the box was saved by the keeper once more. Owen nearly scored past Olllie with twenty minutes remaining as the defender's free-kick struck the base of the right hand post. The insurance goal came six minutes from time as Sykes launched another throw into the penalty area. Half cleared the ball fell nicely to Youel, who deserved to get on the scoresheet for the first time this season. A rare foul by the Wellers in the game saw a harsh booking, and harsher still was the low driven shot by Wonham that beat Charlie Preston at the left hand post - well taken as it was.
