NCEL- Game 15
26/10/24 - Wombwell Town vs Yorkshire Amateur
After back-to-back wins in different cup competitions it was a return to league action for the Wellers who welcomed Yorkshire Amateur - the side who knocked them out of the NCEL League Cup earlier in the season. Despite sitting at the foot of the table, the visitors were bright and attacking for the majority of the first half with regular switches across the pitch causing problems for the Wellers. However, it was Yorkshire Amateur keeper Fabio Intumbo who had to make the first save of the game as his own player's strange lofted clearance backwards had to be tipped over the crossbar on seven minutes. Noel Nfonkey proved to be a threat down the left hand side and an earlier save by Charlie Preston at his right hand post was just a warm-up for the away man as a similar shot on 15 minutes beat Preston in the same spot. The build-up play saw Nfonkey link with striker Danilo Mossolo on the edge of the penalty and the winger's low shot towards the right hand post was too powerful for the Weller's keeper. The Wellers started to build-up pressure after the goal and chances by Josh Nodder, Gavin Allott and Danny Youel all went wide of the target. With Wombwell Town now in control the equaliser was a deserved one on 39 minutes as Owen Sykes's cross from deep on the left found Nodder who volleyed home for his 5th goal of the season. WTFC 1, YAFC 1. Whatever was said at half time in the Wellers changing room did the trick, as the home side became relentless in the second half. The lead came just five minutes in as Youel's pass to Jordan Kershaw just inside the penalty area saw a strike that left the Ammers' keeper frozen to the spot as the ball flew into the top right hand corner of the net. Two minutes later and the lead was extended with Nodder volleying home from the same position into the top left corner following a throw. Sykes' missile on the right was headed off the line to the path of Nodder who wasn't going to miss the opportunity to shoot. Frustration was starting to grow for the visitors in a game where there were no yellow cards, but a straight red was the only option for referee Bradley Triffitt on 58 minutes as Kaydon Fishley launched himself off the ground, two-footed, at Kane Reece in the middle of the pitch. Luckily Reece was able to continue after what could have been a nasty injury. Kershaw thought he had scored his second of the game on 72 minutes after he fired home from a long throw from the left, but after a discussion between referee and assistant a touch on after the throw put the striker just offside. With the game drawing to a conclusion there was just enough time for Nodder to become provider as his cross from the right following a late corner met the head of Jack Dando at the far post to see the defender score on his return. Wombwell Town - 4 Josh Nodder - 39, 52 Jordan Kershaw - 50 Jack Dando - 90+4 Yorkshire Amateur - 1 Noel Nfonkey - 15 Attendance: 111
