WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
NCEL- Game 18
16/11/24 - Wombwell Town vs Armthorpe Welfare

There are games where everything works out and miss-hit shots find their way through, and there are others where every effort fails to hit the target.

Sadly, it was the latter for the Wellers who couldn't beat Rhys Toft in the Armthorpe goal, despite chances being created throughout the game.

The chance that did matter came for the visitors on 22 minutes as a ball from the left wing found Ryan Ellison in the box and his low volley beat Charlie Preston down to the keeper's right.

First half chances for Josh Nodder and Jack Dando went wide and over the frame of the goal, and Gavin Allott's header only found the arms of Toft.

The best chance of the first half for the Wellers came via Nodder's free kick from 25 yards. Toft did well to get down to his right hand post and push the ball away for a corner after 38 minutes.

WTFC 0, AWFC 1.

It wouldn't be unfair to say the Wellers had a majority of the game in the Armthorpe half in the second 45, but as time went on it was becoming obvious a goal wasn't going to come.

Allott started the string of missed chances with a header over the bar on 48 minutes and later a back-heeled pass to Kane Reece saw the advancing playmaker set up Nodder in the box, with Toft collecting another shot on target.

Danny Youel tried to become provider on 63 minutes as his cross from the left found Allott and the header back across goal was watched in near slow motion as the ball went narrowly wide.

Nodder's corner on 73 minutes was headed onto the roof of the net by Owen Fieldsend, who was looking for his first goal in a Wombwell shirt.

Kershaw became the next player to header over the crossbar, this time from a Danny Patterson corner.

As more chances went begging frustrations were starting to show and in added time a waved-away penalty appeal for a foul on Fieldsend saw Jason Paling booked after claiming a corner. A  header wide by Jack Dando then saw the defender sin-binned for being angry at himself, that the referee thought was directed at him.
