NCEL- Game 2
30/07/24 - Wombwell Town vs Ilkley Town
With Gavin Allott starting his first game for the club since November, some people wondered whether he would be able to produce the same level of quality as last season, however those questions were quickly answered. Coming into the game having played 36 minutes of the previous game (and scoring) as a substitute it meant Allott had 17 goals in 12 appearances for the Wellers. It was soon to be 20 by the end of his shift against Ilkley Town. Whether it was good fortune or good timing, manager Karl Rose appeared in the dugout a few minutes into the game having just returned from his holiday, but whatever it was he was just in time for the opening goal of the game. On nine minutes Owen Sykes' missile into the penalty area was flicked on and pounced upon by Allott who gave Keen no chance in the Ilkley Net. Just four minutes later Allott was at it again and headed home a delicious cross from Josh Nodder on the right hand side - with the winger receiving a peach of a ball from Jack Dando to start the move. Ilkley Town had won their opening day game just like Wombwell, and weren't going down without a fight. On 27 minutes a free kick from 30 yards was powered past Charlie Preston, despite a touch, into the top corner by Daniel Smith. The hat-trick was completed on 39 minutes as another Sykes throw from the right caused chaos in the box. Captain Rikki Paylor was able to scoop up the ball at the far post and a touch around the penalty area finally saw Allott dispatch the ball into the net once more. WTFC 3, ITAFC 1. The second half was a quieter affair with Ilkley coming out the stronger, but failing to really test Preston again throughout. There was one more goal in the second half to please the fans and ease the pressure of any potential comeback and it came from yet another Sykes throw on the right hand side. At this point no one was surprised! The 67th minutes throw was launched to the near post and a redirection by Jay Harris brushed off Jack Dando who was certainly going to claim the goal more than the Ilkley defender. Allott powered on to last 73 minutes before being replaced by debutante Alfie Broughton, who added pace and width to the attack for the final minutes and Ilkley were probably glad to see the back of Allott and Sykes (who was replaced with nine minutes to go) until the teams meet again. Wombwell Town - 4 Ilkley Town - 1 Gavin Allott - 9, 13, 39 Jack Dando - 67 Attendance: 155.
