NCEL- Game 20
03/12/24 - Wombwell Town vs Selby Town
After a run of three defeats and a draw, the result against Selby Town was a much needed one, and it came in dramatic fashion. The Wellers took the lead on just eight minutes as Niall Smith’s cross found Kane Reece on the right side of the penalty area and after a good first touch was able to beat Liam Wilson with a low shot into the opposite corner. Some fans thought there was a second goal just five minutes later as Reece looked to have scored again, but the effort came off the base of the post into the keeper’s arms. The visitors equalised on 20 minutes from a corner as the ball was rolled to Declan Racher on the left wing. The cross turned into a shot as the ball curled over Charlie Preston and into the far corner, when it looked destined for a goal kick. A few half chances saw Eddie Agnew and Jordan Kershaw causing little bother to Wilson. HT: WTFC 1, STFC 1. A lack of confidence may have been a reason for recent results, and it could have been knocked further just three minutes in as Jason Paling fouled in the area to concede a penalty. Selby Captain Harry Clapham sent Preston the wrong way to give them the lead. The Wellers said ‘no’ to another bad result and looked to equalise almost immediately! On 52 minutes Nodder’s cross from the left was volleyed by Rikki Paylor against a defender and out for a corner. This sparked that hope of confidence and after two penalty appeals were waved away the equaliser finally came on 61 minutes. Jordan Kershaw was put through the middle and after beating the keeper on the edge of the box, scored into the empty net. Just three minutes later the lead was restored as Reece grabbed his second. Agnew played in Nodder down the left and the low cross found Reece who put the ball into the net after a scramble on the line with two defenders. On 69 minutes it was four as Nodder became supplier - this time from a corner. Agnew’s head connected at the far, left hand post and was powerful enough to beat Wilson. With just over a quarter of an hour to go Nodder stayed onside from Reece’s pass to score at the right post from an almost impossible angle. A final goal with a minute remaining on the clock saw Keece complete his hat-trick. Having hit the left hand post and a second fumbled by the keeper, the third shot went in! Wombwell Town - 6 Kane Reece - 8, 64, 89 Jordan Kershaw - 61 Eddie Agnew - 69 Josh Nodder - 74 Selby Town - 2 Declan Racher - 20 Harry Clapham - 49 (pen) Attendance: 147
