NCEL- Game 21
14/12/24 - Wombwell Town vs Dearne & District
After the disappointment of being knocked out of the FA Vase last weekend, Wombwell Town bounced back with a dominant display against rivals Dearne & District. The two clubs sat third and second going into the game with the winner claiming second by the end of the afternoon. Pressure from the Wellers came immediately and inside the first five minutes Jordan Kershaw's twist and turns inside the box confused the Dearne defence and after his initial shot was blocked, Kane Reece's follow up was saved by the legs of stand-out Dearne keeper Ellis Pickard. The resulting corner caused some confusion all-round as Pickard's clearing punch went behind him and was knocked in by Reece on the line. Up went the assistant's flag for offside, but after a discussion with referee Harry Atkin they gave the goal and the ball was played by the Dearne keeper irradicating any offside. There was no doubt about the second goal just five minutes later as a corner for Dearne was punched clear by Wellers' keeper Charlie Preston to Josh Nodder, whose swept ball found Kershaw bursting through on the right hand side, leaving his defender for dust. Travelling into the penalty area, Kershaw picked his spot and fired low past Pickard into the opposite corner of the goal. It was almost three on 17 minutes after Kershaw was fouled by Tejean Wesseh and the resulting free kick was headed back across goal by Owen Fieldsend to his centre back partner, and captain, Jack Dando who volleyed the ball into the net. On this occasion though the offside flag was raised against a Weller blocking the keeper's view. Several chances in the final ten minutes for the home side could have resulted in more goals, had it not been for Pickard who denied Owen Sykes (returning from injury) first from one of his throw in missiles, then from a low, driven shot following a long punt up field by Preston. HT: WTFC 2, DDFC 0. It was a quieter second half as Wombwell took full control of the game, but it was Pickard who kept the score line respectable still. The former Athersley Rec keeper denied Nodder on 53 minutes from a Sykes throw on the left, but there was nothing he could do on 65 minutes as Nodder added a third. Sykes was involved again as he picked up the ball down the left by the home dugout and ran half the length of the pitch unchallenged, before a high ball into the far end of the penalty area found Nodder unmarked. Two touches later and Nodder was ready to shoot and the curling effort evaded Pickard and found the net via the right hand post. Nodder almost grabbed his second of the game on 77 minutes after receiving a pass from sub Danny Youel on the edge of the area. Pickard just got enough on the save to deflect the ball onto the crossbar and over for a corner. At the other end Preston was largely untested in goal, and he and his team recorded a long overdue clean sheet to complete a satisfying afternoon. Wombwell Town - 3 Kane Reece - 5 Jordan Kershaw - 10 Josh Nodder - 65 Dearne & District - 0 Attendance: 145
