NCEL- Game 22
21/12/24 - Dronfield Town vs Wombwell Town
The Wellers couldn't have asked for a better performance just days before Christmas as they put nine past a struggling Dronfield side. It was the home side who started putting on the pressure though, with no real attempt at goal coming from their early advances. The tide turned on 13 minutes as an Owen Sykes long throw from the left was eventually put it at the far post by Jordan Kershaw. Kershaw doubled the lead just nine minutes later as he got his body down low to connect with a volley from Jack Wilson's left hand cross and fire past Dronfield captain and keeper Lewis Naylor. To make matters worse for the home side, Naylor was shown a straight red card on 29 minutes after he handled the rebounded block by Kershaw from a clearance outside the penalty area. Sam Bebbington went in goal for the remainder of the match. Bebbington recorded his first save on 38 minutes as Danny Patterson fired from 25 yards, only to be denied by the stand-in. From the resulting corner though, Patterson swung his corner straight into the near post to make it three without reply. Jason Paling, not known for his goal scoring abilities, added another two minutes later as the right back found himself free on the right edge of the area and fired across goal to net only his second goal for the club in 73 appearances. As the game headed into added time a move down the left saw Kershaw fouled, but referee Josh Thompson played advantage with Sykes on the ball moving forward. The left back's cross into the box found the head of Charlie Rogerson and the midfielder found the back of the net for his first goal for the club, despite attempts to clear off the line. HT: DTFC 0, WTFC 5. Ten minutes into the second half and captain Jack Dando headed in at the right hand post following Sykes' cross from the right. Dronfield's half cleared attempt from a corner wasn't enough. The goal of the afternoon came on 63 minutes as another Sykes corner was half cleared towards the edge of the penalty area where Jordan Kershaw decided to do a bicycle kick and rebound the ball into the top corner. No keeper would have stopped that effort as the striker completed his hat-trick and took the mantle as the club's current top scorer. A foul on Kershaw by Bebbington gave the Wellers a penalty and Owen Sykes made it eight. Bebbington got his finger tips to the ball, however the spot kick was too powerful and found the keeper's bottom left corner. Despite the score, Dronfield kept battling and having given several youngsters a run out, substitute Harry Marsh broke free as the game headed into added time and slotted into the bottom right corner past the onrushing Charlie Preston. The Wellers had the final say though as half time sub Nick Guest added a ninth and final goal for the visitors two minutes later. Dronfield Town - 1 Harry Marsh - 90 Wombwell Town - 9 Jordan Kershaw 13, 22, 63 Danny Patterson 39 Jason Paling 41 Charlie Rogerson 45+1 Jack Dando 55 Owen Sykes 67 Nick Guest 90+2 Attendance: 108
