NCEL- Game 23
28/12/24 - Wombwell Town vs Glasshoughton Welfare
After the high of winning their pre-Christmas game 9-1, the Wellers felt a equal low feeling having been 5-1 down at one stage against Glasshoughton. The final game of 2024 couldn't have started worse for them as the visitors took the lead through Evan Fortune-West after just three minutes. The shot catching the unsighted Charlie Preston off guard as the ball found the net at the right hand post. Pressure from the home side mounted, but a combination of strong defending and tight marking limited the attempts at goal - with Owen Fieldsend's header wide and Kane Reece's volley straight into the arms of the keeper the closest they came. Glasshoughton doubled their lead on 32 minutes as Liam Flanagan found himself unmarked and able to lob Preston from outside the penalty area. Eddie Agnew had the ball in the net on 42 minutes, but it was disallowed due to an obvious offside as several Wombwell players were slow to get back onside following a cleared corner. A minute into added time and the Wellers were on the scoresheet thanks to an Owen Sykes free-kick that beat Adam Hewitson at his right hand post. HT: WTFC 1, GWFC 2. Chances of a comeback were thwarted by the visitors as they capitalised on both efforts to push forward and some poor defensive errors. On 58 minutes Josh Nodder's low strike was collected by Hewitson and a quick release saw Glasshoughton take the ball down the left and find Flanagan who netted his second of the game. Flanagan's hat-trick was completed on 67 minutes as Wellers' heads dropped even more and a lack of confidence saw Fortune-West beat Fieldsend to the ball on the edge of the area just three minutes later to make it two for him and five for the team. Changes were made and substitute Danny Youel gave the fans something to cheer as he recorded two goals in three minutes to give them a glimour of hope. Youel's first on 83 minutes saw a low strike across goal find the side-netting of the right side upright, while his second two minutes later was another low effort straight towards goal that made its way past a crowd of players and past Hewitson. The pressure kept mounting as with two minutes to go Agnew's fierce effort struck the left hand post, but the club's all-time top scorer finally got his reward a minute into added time as he put in the rebound after yet another effort struck the post. Sadly, despite a further five minutes of added time, the Wellers couldn't find the equaliser that would have made the comeback one of the best in recent history. Wombwell Town - 4 Owen Sykes 45+1 Danny Youel 83, 85 Eddie Agnew 90+1 Glasshoughton Welfare - 5 Evan Fortune-West 3, 70 Liam Flanagan 32, 58, 67 Attendance: 185
