NCEL- Game 26
01/02/25 - Maltby Main vs Wombwell Town
The start of a busy February for the Wellers began with a trip to Maltby Main, who had special guests in band, and shirt sponsors, Bring Me the Horizon in attendance. A crowd of 529 were in attendance with some supporting both sides and some there purely or the band, but to put a dampener on events an early goal for the visitors reminded people of the importance of getting the points for Wombwell. Eddie Agnew's pressure on goalkeeper Lewis Fox, who had come out of his area to clear the ball, resulted in a poor kick straight to Jordan Kershaw who made no mistake in returning the ball towards goal and into the empty net after just three minutes. The home side were clearly getting frustrated as the half went on and after 25 minutes a kick out by Steven Taylor on Kershaw then saw the full back shove the striker with both palms in front of the referee. Bizarrely no red card was shown for violent conduct, not even a free kick given! It did lead to Karl Rose and Jason Dodsworth speaking to the referee, which inevitably led to Dodsworth receiving a yellow card. Maltby found an equaliser three minutes before half time as a ball into the box wasn't dealt with and Ashley Flynn had just enough space to fire into the bottom right corner. Half Time: 1-1 The Wellers, now attacking up hill, had the best of the chances in the second half, but it started with more controversy a minute in as Agnew was pushed down from behind in the area, with nothing given once more. Debutante Regan Kelly's cross on 53 minutes was headed over by Liam Owen, who had a second chance two minutes later, but volleyed over the crossbar. In between the Owen efforts Agnew was once again fouled in the area with nothing given and as Agnew returned to his feet the counter attack was put into the net at the other end by Maltby, who were denied taking the lead by the offside flag. More chances by Josh Nodder and substitute Charlie Rogerson came and went begging before yet more controversy saw the referee do nothing once more. On 72 minutes Nodder's cross from the right was about to find the feet of Kershaw, before a diving Maltby player got in front and punched the ball to his keeper. It felt like it was going to be one of those afternoon's, but two minutes into added time an overhit back pass by Angelo Tambini was brushed by Kershaw to change its direction just enough to wrong foot Fox and find the back of the net for the winner. As added time continued a ball into the Wellers box saw keeper Charlie Dando collect and go to ground, only to be kicked repeatedly by at least one Maltby player. Cue fractious scenes as players went to protect their keeper. After consulting with his assistant the referee sent off both Maltby's Jack Greeves and Wombwell's Owen Fieldsend. Both of whom looked shocked by the decision. Video footage will be looked at to see if any appeal can be made! In the 99th minute another kick out, this time on Kershaw, by the half way touchline, went unpunished and Maltby were even given the throw after the challenge - the referee showing his weakness one last time before he remembered to blow the final whistle after a 55 minutes second half. Maltby Main - 1 Ash Flynn 42 Wombwell Town - 2 Jordan Kershaw 3, 90+2 Attendance: 529
