NCEL- Game 27
04/02/25 - Appleby Frodingham vs Wombwell Town
There are some games where you have to battle hard, grab a late goal, take the points and prepare for the next game, and the club's first trip to Appleby Frodingham was one of these. The hosts are battling at the wrong end of the table - sitting ten points adrift from safety - only kept off the bottom spot by goal difference going into this game. It would have been easy to think the Wellers, unbeaten in 2025 and away from home in the league all season, would fancy their chances, but the brave performance by Appleby kept the visitors frustrated until the very end. There were chances galore in the first half with several efforts going wide and closer chances clipping the right hand post (Owen Sykes' header on 35 minutes) and left hand post (Jordan Kershaw's shot two minutes into first half added time) kept the game scoreless. Appleby had rare chances at the other end with Adbdulrahman Alghamdi creating the majority of the chances down the left wing, none of which really challenged Charlie Dando in the net. Half Time: 0-0 Just after the hour Kershaw travelled with the ball into the area before a crunching tackle by Sam East wiped out the forward who was about to shoot. Despite the crunch and shouts from the crowd a goal kick was awarded instead of the penalty. The Wellers kept going and started to create half chances in the final twenty minutes without really testing Jordan Quibell in goal. Appleby Frodingham, playing with a minimum of ten men in defence at all times, were clearly hoping for the draw. Their hearts were broken two minutes before the 90 as Dando's free kick from his own half was touched on by Kershaw to the right foot of Regan Kelly who scooped the ball over the defender and keeper to score the all-important winning goal. Appleby then became desperate to get a point as East was finally booked, before substitute Kenneth Tafireyi was first booked for simulation four minutes into added time and then given his marching orders for a late tackle on Jack Wilson four minutes later. The one goal was enough, but the hosts made it difficult right to the very end! Appleby Frodingham - 0 Wombwell Town - 1 Regan Kelly 88 Attendance: 110
