NCEL- Game 3
03/08/24 - Wombwell Town vs Club Thorne Colliery
Newly promoted side Club Thorne have already made a name for themselves in the NCEL with an opening day win against favourites Wakefield followed by a draw at Selby Town midweek, and there was an early goal to let Wombwell know what they were in for on a dry Saturday afternoon. Just four minutes in the visitors took the lead as Dominic Mellor's run down the left saw a delivery into the box to find Harry Brown leave his marker and tap home past Charlie Preston. It was an instant reaction from the Wellers and within a space of a minute two shots fired by Gadhafi Kiwanuka and Connor Hodgson were both blocked inside the penalty area. The equaliser came on 18 minutes as Jordan Kershaw latched onto a cross from the right with Club Thorne's Tommy Waud losing his footing as he tried to get to the mid-air ball. Kershaw kept his cool as he outfoxed onrushing keeper, and former Nostell teammate, Rhys Toft to sneak around his frame and slot into the empty net. The relief and determination on Kershaw's face as he bagged his first goal of the season was beautifully captured on camera, to prove how much it meant for the forward. Both teams were able to cancel each other out in the remainder of the half with the only real efforts to note were a shot against the side netting for both sides. WTFC 1, CTC 1. With the wind now in the Wellers favour during the second half it was bound to be benefit for the home team. Owen Sykes has built a reputation on his long throws into the box, which Club Thorne dealt with well, but it was another weapon that caught the visitors out four minutes into the half. A corner on the right was swung into the box by the left back and floated over everybody's heads and curled directly into the top left hand corner of the net with no one reacting quick enough to the ball, much to Thorne's frustrations. The Wellers had chances to extend their lead with Josh Nodder, looking for his first goal for the club, forcing Toft to push the ball over the bar, after the winger cut inside and powered a shot towards goal from the edge of the area on the hour. Kershaw was put through on goal again on 73 minutes, but this time he couldn't connect cleanly and Toft made a comfortable save down low. Fear was in the air of a late Club Thorne equaliser as a free kick was given 30 yards from goal a minute into added time, but the lay-off to the man in the box was cut out by the alert Wellers defence, who were then able to see the game out for the rest of the seven minutes of added on time. Wombwell Town - 2 Jordan Kershaw - 18 Owen Sykes - 49 Club Thorne - 1 Harry Brown - 4 Attendance: 149.
