NCEL- Game 30
15/02/25 - Selby Town vs Wombwell Town
In another end to end game of football, it was the Wellers who were on the front foot first in this tight contest. The opening three minutes saw a penalty appeal waved away as Eddie Agnew was hauled to the ground, shortly followed by a superb Liam Owen pass to find Jordan Kershaw on the right of the box. After cutting inside past two defenders the shot across goal cannoned off the right hand post and away to safety. Selby then took control for a spell and on 16 minutes Charlie Preston, returning in the net for Charlie Dando, did well to get down low to his left to deny the striker a certain goal. The softest of penalties was awarded on 28 minutes as a slight brushing of two players saw Matthew Dawes go to ground, leaving Wombwell dumfounded at the decision. Thankfully though Preston's record of saving spot kicks is great, and a dive to his left denied Harry Clapham from giving the hosts the lead. Another penalty wasn't awarded for the Wellers just five minutes later a Josh Nodder took the ball into the box before his arm was pulled to drag him off the ball. Four minutes before the break the left hand post was rattled this time with Agnew striking just off target from distance, the ball back in play then saw Selby keeper Joe Wilton tipped the follow-up over the crossbar. It took four nasty challenges by Danny Davison to finally persuade the referee to book the Selby man, when a stronger official would have dismissed him much earlier in the half. Half Time: 0-0 The second half started similarly with Selby headed over the bar in the opening minutes, but eventually the game settled and swung into the favour of the Wellers. On 63 minutes the breakthrough came as a clearance by substitute Gareth McDermott found Kershaw who made a 30 yard run towards goal. Despite nearly being taken out by the desperate defender, the marksman carried on into the penalty area and fired past Wilton. As the game became more frantic, Selby seemed to lose their concentration and their cool, and this only benefitted the visitors who kept their defence tight and looked to hit their opponents on the break. Deep into added time it looked as though one would be enough, but a break down the right saw Kershaw free once more, but after careful thought he played the ball across to the left hand post for substitute Kane Reece to volley in to make sure of the points. Comments must have been made as Selby's Ryan Gothard received a second yellow as the Wellers celebrated and the hosts were down to ten for what remained of the match.
