NCEL- Game 31
22/02/25 - Wombwell Town vs Shelley
The game against Shelley proved to be a difficult one as the side who recently held fellow title chasers Wakefield to a 0-0 draw almost took all three points at the Recreation Ground. The Wellers had the early pressure without really testing Paul Day in the visitors net, but as pressure mounted a corner by Josh Nodder had to be cleared off the line by Stephen Williams from Captain Jack Dando's header and the defender volleyed the rebound over the crossbar on 18 minutes. Two minutes later a throw on the right hand side by Owen Sykes was met by the head of Owen Fieldsend to Jordan Kershaw, whose unorthodox effort towards goal left the forward on the ground and the ball deflect to the keeper quite calmly. Shelley made a break with a launch down the left that saw the visitors win the free kick in front of the main stand. The resulting delivery into the box found top scorer Akram Lasalire free to direct his header over Charlie Dando who could only watch the ball drop into the net. Half Time: 0-1 Something different was required in the second half and newly signed Michael Borja Sanchez (MBS for short) came on to inject fresh energy. The change had an instant impact as two minutes after the restart, Jack Wilson switched the play down the left to Josh Nodder who carried the ball twenty yards before firing from distance across the keeper. Day was able to get a hand onto the ball, but the shot was too powerful and went in off the left hand post. As chances for Kershaw were collected by the keeper again and again, MBS tried his luck on 66 minutes as he raced onto the ball and from just inside the area shot across goal and wide of the right hand post. Potential disaster struck on 73 minutes as another move by Shelley down their left saw the forward stopped in his tracks by a challenge by Charlie Rogerson. A straight red card seemed harsh, but either way it left the Wellers down to ten. Shelley made the extra man count and on 81 minutes Charlie Dando kept the game level with a spectacular punch to push a fierce shot over the crossbar. MBS fired onto the post at the other end just a minute later, but as Shelley broke Jack Dando leaned onto his man too much and a free kick was awarded. Direct from the free kick Lasalire proved deadly once more and beat our keeper to restore their lead. The Wellers didn't give up and with a large amount of added time indicated a push for a equaliser was very much in action. Two minutes over the 90 a throw from the right by Sykes was kept off the line from Captain Dando and fell to Kane Reece who stretched to connect with the ball and hit the rebound up against the crossbar and down, but not over the line before being cleared. With the Shelley bench shouting for the full time whistle after more than seven minutes added on, the equaliser came! It was another long throw by Sykes that found Ethan Fox who connected strongly and the unleashed shot nearly tore a hole in the net. A late, late equaliser could prove crucial at the end of the season with eleven games to go! Wombwell Town - 2 Josh Nodder 47 Ethan Fox 90+7 Shelley - 2 Akram Lasalire 21, 83 Attendance: 163
