WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
NCEL- Game 32
01/03/25 - Wombwell Town vs Swallownest

Visitors Swallownest produced a performance that makes you look at the league table and question how they were 15th at the start of the day.

It took a couple of blocks and a clearance off the line in the opening eight minutes to keep the score level before James Hardeman fired wide twenty minutes.

Eventually the Wellers got to grips with the game and on 27 minutes midfielder Cian Guest fired home his first goal for the club. Swallownest keeper Ollie Sykes got a strong hand to the ball, but couldn't keep it out.

It was almost two just four minutes later as Michael Borja Sanchez fired just wide from inside the penalty area.

Three minutes into added time Josh Nodder's left footed cross from the right wing saw Jordan Kershaw dive forward to try and head home, only for his header to be deflected by Sykes to the striker on the deck and a swing of the leg put the rebound into the net.

Half Time: 2-0

Swallownest felt there was something in the game for them and on the hour a cross from the left fell to top scorer Alex Wonham outside the area and his thunderous volley gave Charlie Dando in goal very little chance of saving.

The Wellers were desperate for a third goal and following an Owen Fieldsend volley over the bar a third came a minute later as a Nodder ball down the middle put substitute Liam Owen through one goal on 73 minutes and a cool nutmeg beat Sykes.

The visitors kept going and just two minutes later pulled the game back to a one goal deficit as Billy Stafford struck low across goal into the right side corner of the net.

A second goal by Stafford from close range with three minutes remaining was a real dent to Wombwell's title hopes, but with ten matches remaining for the Wellers and Wakefield, and only six for leaders Horbury, anything can still happen in the final weeks of the season.

Remain calm and keep the faith!
