NCEL- Game 33
04/03/25 - Athersley Rec vs Wombwell Town
Wombwell Town were left scratching their heads at full time as to how they only managed to score once past local rivals Athersley Rec. The majority of the match was played in the Rec half of the field and it was akin to watching England face one of the lowly ranked nations who just 'park the bus' and rarely threaten at the other end. The stand out performance for Rec was undoubtably Levi Owen in goal, who despite not being the average goalkeeper in height that you may think of, made himself heard by commanding his defence and making some big saves. A notable save came on 17 minutes as a Josh Nodder cross from the left saw Jordan Kershaw rise the highest and head down low towards goal, only for Owen for get down quickly enough and palm the ball back up into the air. Following the save the ball resulting scramble led to a home side free-kick so they could clear their lines for a moment. Half Time: 0-0 The second half became a bit of a blur once Wombwell took the lead on 52 minutes. Owen Sykes' trademark throw from near the right corner flag was touched on by Owen Fieldsend to Captain Jack Dando who unorthodox connected with the ball caught out the keeper and looped into the net. A nasty challenge by Noah Jenkinson on Kershaw with twenty minutes to go saw the striker helped from the pitch and replaced for the remainder of the game. Despite all the pressure from the visitors, there was almost an unlikely comeback in added time, but appeals for handball saw no interest by referee Craig Holland and the full time whistle came shortly after.
