NCEL- Game 37
21/03/25 - Wombwell Town vs Worsbrough Bridge
There was no wonder a fantastic crowd of 377 turned out for this game with so much on the line for both teams. The Wellers are still in contention for the title (with a win guaranteeing a play-off spot) and The Briggers needing a win to boost their own play-off chances. It was the visitors who came out of the traps brightly and without an early save from Sebastian Malkowski within the first 30 seconds the game could have been very different. As it was the Wellers took the lead after four minutes as Eddie Agnew drove forward and unleashed an effort that struck Harry Ambler's left upright, but fall kindly to Ollie Fearon who found the net from a narrow angle. The Wellers doubled their advantage just six minutes later as a counter attack from a Worsbrough corner saw Owen Fieldsend deliver a long ball to the feet of Agnew, who turned Josh McKay inside out and fired past Ambler for his 20th goal of the season. Just a minutes later it was almost three as debutante Mason Smith, recently signed from Ecclesfield Red Rose, found himself free down the right hand side but his shot travelled across goal and wide of the target. There was a lull in the game as both sides settled into the scoreline, but on 39 minutes Cian Guest became provider as he switched the ball from right to left to find Agnew in a similar position to his first goal. Once again the all-time top scorer got past his marker, but Ambler was up to the task to deny Agnew this time. Lewis O'Connor came close to pulling a goal back for Worsbrough on 42 minutes as his close range effort went across goal and wide, but things got worse for the midfielder who went off injured before half time. Half Time: 2-0 The Wellers wanted to make sure the points were secured and thought they got a third a minute into the second half as Sam Finlaw's strike straight at Ambler saw the keeper fail to hold the ball, with Fearon ready to pounce. Ambler made the save and collided with Fearon, but the loose ball was put into the empty net by Agnew. After a discussion with his assistant it was ruled out for offside. Guest made it three just six minutes into the half as a perfect pass by Finlaw found the midfielder in the box and despite a deflection the ball found the net. The pace and passing of the Wellers kept Worsbrough on the back foot and on 54 minutes the game was put out of their reach as Finlaw was the creator once again. A cross from the right corner was perfect for Fearon to rise above his marker and head over Ambler into the far corner for his 5th goal in five appearances. Finlaw has yet to score in a Wellers shirt and he came close on 66 minutes as he forced the ever-busy Ambler into yet another save. The game went from bad to worse for Worsbrough as former Wellers' man Owen Birks saw a straight red with just under 20 minutes remaining. The dangerous tackle on sub Michael Borja Sanchez ended the defender's evening early. There was a huge applause on 83 minutes as Gareth McDermott came on as a substitute to make his 150th appearance for the club and the club legend almost found himself on the scoresheet when he blazed a free kick just over the crossbar. The last action of the game saw Guest force one last good save by Ambler with a headed effort, but before the corner could be taken the referee blew to end Worsbrough's pain.
