WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
NCEL- Game 38
26/03/25 - South Leeds vs Wombwell Town

Wombwell’s first visit to South Leeds did not yield the amount of points they were hoping for as the Wellers had to come from behind to clinch a valuable point.

The same starting XI who did so well in the previous game against Worsbrough had belief put onto them, despite the return of captain Jack Dando and top scorer Jordan Kershaw to the squad.

The visitors controlled the opening 10 minutes with only an Ollie Fearon over the bar as a result.

A string of passes down the right for South Leeds broke the deadlock on 15 minutes as Luca Grant’s flat pass found Jamal Stewart in the box and free to turn on the ball and strike past Sebastian Malkowski - giving the Polish keeper no chance.

Its fair to say the game went flat after the goal as South Leeds sat back in a 4-5-1 formation and waited for counter attacking moments.

The 38th minute could have been a turning point in the game as the hosts Sam McDonnell went in hard on Cian Guest in a similar challenge that saw Owen Birks sent off for Worsbrough the previous Friday night.

A yellow was shown, but elsewhere Eddie Agnew was replaced after sustaining a knock to his calf and ankle earlier in the game and Kershaw entered the game.

Half Time: 1-0

The second half brought a gun-ho attitude to proceedings as Karl Rose and Jason Dodsworth threw everyone and the kitchen sink forward looking for a goal.

The Wellers ended up with a 3-3-4 formation with defensive cover and caution thrown out.

Chances started to emerge as Owen Fieldsend headed wide just before the hour, moments before the ball hit the back of the net.

Sadly, the effort by Mason Smith was ruled out for a handball in the build-up, but there were signs of a comeback approaching.

The score was finally level on 71 minutes as a long kick by Malkowski found Kershaw on the edge of the opposition penalty area. The striker’s strength took him into the box and the shot found the net, despite the keeper getting a touch as he raced out of his goal mouth.

Staunch attacking play almost backfired four minutes later as Jock Curran rescued the Wellers on the goal line before Malkowski was forced into making a leg save to keep things level.

One final big chance with six minutes remaining saw Michael Borja-Sanchez strike from a narrow angle - beating the keeper but not the right hand post.
