NCEL- Game 39
29/03/25 - Wombwell Town vs Appleby Frodingham
Both teams had something to play for as this game began with the Wellers looking to keep the pressure on Horbury at the top (or at the very least gain second) while Appleby Frodingham needed the points to keep their relegation survival hopes alive. It was the home team who had the better of the early exchanges with Jack Dando heading into the keeper's arms and Mason Smith forcing a save to put the ball behind both within the opening seven minutes. The visitors took the lead on 28 minutes though as Abdulrahman Alghamdi volleyed into the top corner after the Wellers defence failed to cover and clear their lines effectively. There was almost an instant reply from the Wellers with Jordan Kershaw flicking an effort onto the roof of the net just a minute after the restart. It looked as though Appleby were going into the break with the lead with just five minutes to go, but a ball into the box from the right by Sam Finlaw found its way to the marauding left back Niall Smith whose first touch took the ball under Jordan Quibell's left arm and into the bottom left corner of the net. The goal was not only Smith's first for the club, but the club's 100th league goal of the season! A corner providing the turnaround goal just three minutes later as Finlaw's corner on the dugout side was powered over the line by Owen Fieldsend. The ball didn't hit the net but the assistant waved to indicate the ball had clearly gone fully over the line. Appleby apoplectic arguing it shouldn't have been a corner in the first place. Half Time: 2-1 Four minutes into the second half a ball into the box from the left wing was handled by Scott Neary and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. A minute later Jordan Kershaw converted from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way. Straight from kick off Appleby were on the offensive and the pace of Alghamdi saw him latch onto a loose back pass and pull it to 3-2. The Wellers pushed for a fourth goal and came close on 57th as a scramble in the box following a corner saw a blocked effort by Fieldsend before Jock Curran put the ball over the bar. Kershaw almost became provider with a quarter of an hour to go as he supplied the perfect ball only for Jason Paling to head over the crossbar. Appleby failed to create any chances in the later stages as the Wellers ran the clock down, but Cian Guest came close with two minutes remaining, forcing another save from Quibell who punched the ball away from goal and towards the corner flag and later, after a good six minutes of added time, the final whistle blew. Wombwell Town - 3 Niall Smith 40 Owen Fieldsend 43 Jordan Kershaw 50 Appleby Frodingham - 2 Abdulrahman Alghamdi 28, 51 Attendance: 160
