NCEL- Game 4
10/08/24 - Dearne & District vs Wombwell Town
In the first competitive game against Dearne & District, a big crowd gathered to witness the continuing good form of the Wellers who made it four wins out of four - and only one of two teams still to have a 100% record in Division One. It was an even opening few minutes but the pressure started to mount on as Josh Nodder headed wide following an Owen Sykes throw. The Weapon of the long throw came to prominence once more as the clock hit double digits and Sykes launched another ball into the area. A flick on by stand-in captain Gavin Allott was redirected by Nodder's nogging from 10 yards and beat Brett Souter for the opening goal of the game, and his Wellers career. Danny Youel's strike from distance failed to double the lead on 32 minutes and just 120 seconds later the home side equalised through Regan Kelly's devious curling effort into the far corner of the net. With half time looming another Sykes throw caused chaos for the Dearne & District defence and a header by Danny Patterson was half cleared to the volleying foot of Jordan Kershaw who struck from close range. A quick check for an offside flag that didn't come saw celebrations as the Wellers retook the lead. DDFC 1, WTFC 2. An early yellow card for the home side set the tone for the second half as Dearne tried to fight back into the game for a second time. The tackle on Kershaw forced the forward off the pitch eight minutes later as he struggled to continue, and the enforced change sparked life into the home side as Charlie Preston was forced into a save with his legs just before the hour. Matters grew worse for Dearne on 63 minutes as a ball into the middle was left by sub Eddie Agnew who knew he was offside and allowed Jack Wilson to race through onto the ball and clear into space. Only keeper Souter could stop the midfielder and as Wilson tried to fire the ball into the empty net a collision wiped out Wilson and both players were down in agony. It was clear the Dearne keeper wasn't going to continue, and even if Souter could he was shown a straight red card. Carried from the pitch the stand-in keeper of Shay Evans Booth donned the gloves and positioned himself in goal for the free-kick. A few minutes later and Wilson also had to depart with Kane Reece taking his place. Against ten men the Wellers struggled to capitalise and the extra determination from the home side almost saw them make it 2-2 with ten minutes remaining. A mix-up at the back saw Dearne through on goal and with Preston out of position the Wellers were grateful when the ball was cleared off the line for a corner. The corner produced another scary moment for the visitors who had another effort to block on the line before finally taking the ball back up the pitch out of their half. Chances in the final minutes saw Nodder hit the side netting from the left wing, and Agnew strike well from the edge of the penalty area, only to be denied by the dive by the stand-in keeper. Brigg Town - 1 Regan Kelly - 34 Wombwell Town - 2 Josh Nodder - 10 Jordan Kershaw - 45 Attendance: 463.
