NCEL- Game 40
05/04/25 - Armthorpe Welfare vs Wombwell Town
With three games to go and a title race heating up, the Wellers were also looking for a little bit of payback from the 1-0 defeat they suffered in the reverse fixture back in November. Things didn't start so well though as after just five minutes keeper Sebba Malkowski was sent off for handball outside the area while 'denying a goal scoring opportunity'. Despite calls for players covering and the shot itself going wide the referee ignored everyone and produced the red. Going to ten men with Owen Sykes in goal (a first time for the left back) only seemed to spur on the Wellers who increased their determination and took the lead after ten minutes. Delicious passing between Josh Nodder and Jordan Kershaw ended with Kershaw in the area and able to strike low across goal to beat Josh Cadman for the opening goal. Despite the extra man, Armthorpe struggled to create in the final third and they found themselves two goals down on 32 minutes as Nodder's corner was met by Owen Fieldsend and the bullet header left the home side defence static. Three minutes later the lead was extended further as Nodder took hold of the ball outside the penalty area and having found space volleyed his effort past Cadman. The end of the half kept the drama alive as Sam Finlaw's sin bin took the Wellers down to nine men for the final minute of the first half, before keeper Cadman held the ball and carried it out of the penalty area and out for a corner. With only the corner given, Nodder's inswinger found Captain Jack Dando free in the penalty area to fire a left foot volley into the net! Half Time: 0-4 Armthorpe had almost resigned themselves to defeat in the second half with only a few glimpses of attacks without ever really testing Sykes. A drop ball following an injury on 65 minutes led to the fifth and final goal of the afternoon as the returned Finlaw played a quick ball to Nodder who took a touch on the edge of the penalty area and curled his effort into the net by the left hand post. A cheeky request from a corner shortly after saw Nodder ask the club secretary if he might get man of the match, to which the reply was simply, 'yes, you had it nailed on at half time'. Fresh legs saw Mason Smith, Nick Guest and Gareth McDermott keep the ball firmly cemented in the Armthorpe half and the frustrations were starting to get the better of them when a high foot connected with Fieldsend with ten minutes remaining. A yellow card was deemed enough, although had it been earlier in the game and not 5-0 the card may have been a different colour. The game ended results elsewhere saw no changes in the league positions, making Tuesday's visit to Harrogate Railway a must win - with a hopeful final day nailbiter around the corner. Armthorpe Welfare - 0 Wombwell Town - 5 Jordan Kershaw 10 Owen Fieldsend 32 Josh Nodder 35, 65 Jack Dando 45+1 Attendance: 134
