NCEL- Game 42
12/04/25 - Wombwell Town vs Athersley Recreation
The Wellers knew all they could do was win and hope that Horbury slipped up at Maltby Main, so Wombwell Town could win the NCEL Division One Title. Captain Jack Dando did was he normally does when he opened the scoring on 16 minutes. A header in front of Rec keeper Levi Owen directed the ball into the side netting to give the challengers the lead. They didn't know it, but before scoring their own goal Horbury had put three past Maltby, sealing their title early on to ease any lingering pressure they may have been feeling. Four minutes later Josh Nodder's effort had to be pushed wide by Owen, as Horbury found themselves down to ten, but the resulting penalty was missed. With word of the score elsewhere reaching the players the game at the Recreation Ground saw a lull and the mood was dampened even more when Maltby headed into their own net to make it 4-0 to the Champions elect. Half Time: 1-0 Maltby made it 4-1 but there were no signs of a comeback as fans stopped refreshing social media for hopeful updates. Instead they enjoyed one-way traffic in the match they were attending and the morale of the players and fans were lifted as the Wellers put in a solid second half to lead them into the play-offs. That man Dando was at it again on 57 minutes as another header, this time from an Owen Sykes throw on the left, flew past the stranded keeper. To rest niggling injuries on came Ollie Fearon and Eddie Agnew just after the hour, with Nick Guest joining with 20 minutes remaining. The fresh legs, and potential pushes for a starting place in the next game, obviously worked as Agnew scored a brace to make the game 4-0. All-time top goal scorer Eddie's first came on 77 minutes as an unfortunate bounce for the keeper saw Agnew pounce, take the ball around the keeper, and score into the empty net. Agnew's second came with nine minutes remaining as his header looped over the keeper into the far right corner for his 22nd goal of the season. Moments before the goal Gareth McDermott made his introduction for probably the last time as he replaced Jason Paling. The veteran announced to the team this would be his final game. 'Macca' has made more appearances than any other player for the club and awarded the Man of the Match. It wasn't a dream final outing for Macca though as his sliced clearance from left back skewed across the penalty area to the welcome feet of Adam Stubbs, who couldn't believe his luck and chipped the onrushing Myles Wright from 14 yards. At full time the players knew there would be at least one more game to come this season, but they applauded the fans who had been there all season before leaving the pitch regardless. Wombwell Town - 4 Jack Dando 16, 57 Eddie Agnew 77, 81 Athersley Recreation - 1 Adam Stubbs 88 Attendance: 431
