NCEL- Game 5
17/08/24 - Glasshoughton Welfare vs Wombwell Town
This match-up took a while to heat up, but when it did it made for an entertaining game of football - especially for the neutrals! Glasshoughton got the scoring underway on 17 minutes as Alex Clarke latched onto a ball down the left and was unimpeded when Jason Paling, making his 50th Wellers appearance, couldn't break free of another opponent. It gave Charlie Preston little chance in the way of stopping the shot as it was slotted past him from the left of the box. The lack of energy and determination had to improve if the visitors were going to keep their 100% league record intact. Unsurprisingly, it came curtesy of an Owen Sykes ball into the box, but unlike most of his assists this season it came via his left footed cross rather than a throw. Gavin Allott rose the highest and headed the ball past Callum Oddy on 25 minutes. Just three minutes later the pressure continued as Josh Nodder's corner was first headed on by Rikki Paylor, deflected onto the crossbar by Bubacary Conteh Samateh and found Paylor once more to head towards goal. Once again the same player cleared off the line, but Danny Patterson returned the ball towards goal with a header of his own and found the corner of the net for his first goal for the club. At the other end Preston made two important saves to deny Glasshoughton once more, including an important stop from Daniel Hickey on 37 minutes following a free kick. A footnote to the half was referee Gareth Brown going over to the Glasshoughton bench to ask them to remove a fan from the ground. We're struggling to remember that ever happening before. GWFC 1, WTFC 2. Hickey was involved in one of the most bizarre moments of the season (we cant imagine it being beaten to be honest) as the striker slid in late on Preston who collected the ball and with foot off the floor and studs showing, collided with Preston on his chest with momentum going up to the keeper's chin and cheek. With keeper down and receiving treatment everyone was waiting for the red card. Somehow, only a yellow was shown to Hickey. Preston back up, he was clearly unhappy with the decision, and a comment made after the referee had run away was overheard and back came the referee to punish Preston for being fouled. The keeper was sinbinned and captain Paylor went in goal. The craziness didn't end there as Sam Nelson (although the team sheet says Dwight) equalised on 56 minutes, six minutes into sinbin. Nothing too crazy there, but six minutes later the Wellers re-took the lead as Danny Youel's cross from the right was bundled in under pressure on the line by Allott. On 66 minutes (16 minutes after being shown the sin bin) Preston was finally allowed to return. We understand stoppages aren't included, however there was a good 13/14 minutes played. Some luck finally went Wombwell's way on 68 minutes as Paylor, back in defence, was pushed over in the box and a penalty was awarded. Who else, but Allott to tuck away the penalty to complete his hat-trick. The game was put to bed on 79 minutes as Jack Wilson's ball from the left travelled all the way across to Youel, who supplied the perfect ball back across for the hard-working Jordan Kershaw to finish well and claim a deserved goal for himself. Scoring hadn't finished yet though and Glasshoughton could have bagged a couple if their shooting was better, although substitute Joe Rawcliffe did net three minutes into added time as a goal kick wasn't dealt with and the 8th goal of the game was scored. Glasshoughton Welfare - 3 Alex Clarke - 11 Sam Nelson - 56 Joe Rawcliffe - 90+3 Wombwell Town - 5 Gavin Allott - 25, 62, 69 Danny Patterson - 28 Jordan Kershaw - 79 Attendance: 86.
