NCEL- Game 6
21/08/24 - Wombwell Town vs Dronfield Town
Reminiscent of last season a deluge of rain and wind came just as the players came out onto the pitch, but thankfully, unlike last season The Wellers weathered the Dronfield Town storm and came out on top. The last visit of Dronfield came when the Wellers were suffering badly with injuries and a 1-0 defeat was made worse by the season ended injury of Gavin Allott. Fortune has been with Wombwell Town so far this season with five wins out of five in the league coming into this game and an early effort by Danny Youel set the tone for the game. The midfielder continued his good run of form and found himself in the box, but his curling effort around Lewis Naylor smacked the crossbar after four minutes. Captain Rikki Paylor was the next to have a big effort five minutes later as he controlled the long throw by Owen Sykes under the marking of the Dronfield players and had to volley over his shoulder towards goal. Naylor was equal to it though. The deadlock was broken on 19 minutes as Jordan Kershaw beat the offside trap and powered a shot into the net, despite Naylor getting a touch to the ball Kershaw is also in fine form with a goal in each of the last four league games. It wasn't all one way traffic though and Dronfield's Owen Lester forced Charlie Preston to push the ball over the crossbar following a snap shot that could easily have caught the keeper out. The equaliser came on 29 minutes, just a minute after the save, as a cross from the right found marksman Max Rhodes in the area. Rhodes took the ball on his chest and volleyed past Preston who had no chance to react this time. With seven goals (including two hat-tricks) Allott restored the lead and made it eight for himself on 35 minutes with a header at the back post. The build-up play saw the front three all involved as Josh Nodder clever ball down the left down Kershaw race free to the edge of the penalty area, his floating ball across goal found Allott who rarely makes a mistake with a free header. Dronfield tried to find another equaliser as the game headed to added time, but once again Preston was up to the task and denied the visitors, who then put the follow-up effort wide. WTFC 2, DTFC 1. The half time team talk from Dronfield's Chris Millington clearly did the trick as the visitors came out and caught the Wellers flat footed. A set piece on the right saw the ball travel into the box and with the defence static Sam Bebbington was able to run in at the far post and tap home a simple goal just three minutes into the half. Nodder had not one, but two efforts ruled out for offside before the Wellers eventually did retake the lead on 66 minutes. A searching ball forward found the feet of Allott who took the ball into the box and lobbed the onrushing Naylor for his 25th goal for the club in just 17 appearances. Two minutes later the lead was extended as Nodder finally got his goal. After riding the challenges of two Dronfield defenders, Nodder found the space to unleash a shot in the penalty area to beat Naylor and make it 4-2. The final goal of the game seemed to deflate the visitors and the remainder of the game saw no real efforts on goal for either side. Wombwell Town - 4 Jordan Kershaw - 19 Gavin Allott - 35, 66 Josh Nodder - 68 Dronfield Town - 2 Max Rhodes - 29 Sam Bebbington - 48 Attendance: 145.
