NCEL- Game 7
27/08/24 - Wombwell Town vs Harrogate Railway
This was very much a case of "get the job done" by the Wellers against an opposition who came to frustrate and take a point. Billy Hick was the busier of the two keepers with one important tip over the crossbar following a right wing cross by Josh Nodder on the quarter hour mark. The breakthrough came on 38 minutes as Nodder's corner was swung in for Jordan Kershaw to head into the roof of the net at the left, near post. The Wellers came close to grabbing a second on 45 minutes as Owen Sykes' free kick forced Hick to parry away, and the keeper was able to clear the rebound from Kershaw before the ball finally went out for a corner. WTFC 1, HRA 0. The second half was a much quieter affair with both sides settling in for the night, however the Wellers' lead was doubled on 69 minutes. A long throw by Sykes on the left was flicked on by Jack Dando in the box to the back post where Kershaw was able to slide in and put the ball past Hick on the line. Controversy came on 74 minutes Kershaw was shown a straight red after winning the ball by the touchline. The Harrogate player involved got straight back up to take the throw, however the referee ran over and dismissed the forward. With the video evidence kindly provided by Harrogate Railway, the club will be appealing the dismissal. The extra man didn't help Harrogate, who had more possession, but never really tested Charlie Preston in the Wellers goal. Wombwell Town - 2 Jordan Kershaw - 38, 69 Harrogate Railway - 0 Attendance: 81.
