30/08/24 - Horbury Town vs Wombwell Town
The top two in the league went to battle in this Friday night game - both eager to take points from one another. Last season Horbury Town snatched the points at the death, but this year the Wellers have greater determination and were resilient against an ever-trying home attack. There were calls of a penalty on just four minutes as the Horbury player went down by Charlie Preston, but the referee made a big call and waved away the appeals. The consequences of giving the decision would not have been good for the visitors. In the first half, Horbury struck the crossbar and forced a double save from Preston to really test the keeper, but there was no way through the solid backline. The Wellers had a good shout for a penalty of their own as Jordan Kershaw looked to head the ball, only to be pushed over from behind. Again the referee waved play on. Paul Hagreen was finally tested by Wombwell on 37 minutes as they built up a bit of pressure of their own and Eddie Agnew forced a save before Josh Nodder fired over just moments later. HTFC 0, WTFC 0. Hagreen was called into action again three minutes into the second half as Danny Youel headed towards goal, but there was to be no corner as the offside flag went up following Nodder's cross. Agnew, marking the occasion with his 100th appearance, was replaced by Connor Hodgson to add some stability to the midfield, however a high foot by the midfielder saw the substitute booked just seven minutes after entering the game. As the game's feistiness failed to drop Horbury's Billy Mole received a yellow with nine minutes remaining after a poor tackle on Jordan Kershaw. With the game reaching its conclusion, both sides tried to weather any late storms and in the end it was a stalemate between the top two. The game saw the Wellers earn their third clean sheet in a row and stay six points clear at the top of the NCEL Division One table, at least until Saturday evening.
