NCEL- Game 9
14/09/24 - Louth Town vs Wombwell Town
Without a match for just over two weeks, the Wellers could have been excused for a slow start to the game in their longest trip in the league. Charlie Preston was called upon early as Louth Town dominated the early proceedings with Bailey Wright causing troubles before calling the keeper into action twice in the opening minutes. A first foray into the oppositions half on three minutes yielded a result for the visitors after Josh Nodder was brought down by Louth keeper Alex Lait in the area. Keeper booked, Nodder treatment received and Gavin Allott stepped up to give Wombwell Town the lead in the fifth minute. Preston denied a quick equaliser just three minutes later as he saved a direct free-kick from Wright. There was almost deja vu on 20 minutes as Jordan Kershaw (not suspended after his red card against Harrogate Railway was rescinded) raced into the box and went down after contact was made with the keeper. However, Kershaw was booked for simulation instead of the award of a second penalty. Kershaw didn't complain. More pressure from Louth finally paid off on 26 minutes as a clearing header by Owen Sykes was snatched up by the home side who fed Wright in the penalty area and the standout player finally beat Preston from an acute angle. Wright almost grabbed a second from close range seven minutes later, but was again denied by Preston from point blank. The final chance of the half came on 36 minutes as a long ball into the box eventually found Nodder at the left hand post where his effort towards goal was cleared off the line. LTFC 1, WTFC 1. The Wellers started the second half brighter and almost regained the lead three minutes in as Kershaw set up Nodder who rattled the crossbar. The ball back across goal by Connor Hodgson was then headed wide by Allott. Just before the hour, frustrations of not being given decisions for obvious holding and pushes by Louth players saw Allott sin binned for airing those frustrations and the further lack of free kicks saw Jack Dando become the second player with ten minutes remaining, after he was fouled during a Louth corner. There was simply no talking to the referee. Despite being temporarily a man down, attack was the best form of defence and a combination of Kershaw and Allott on 82 minutes saw a Kershaw shot blocked and fall to substitute Eddie Agnew who netted his fifth goal of the season from two yards out. As Louth looked to equalise for a second time, debutante Cameron Hunt was pushed from behind as he went for a header, with no previous decision given for similar fouls it was no surprise there wasn't one given here either, and the ball fell to Adam Millson who spectacularly volleyed in from 22 yards.
