JCP Construction NCEL League Cup - Round 1
13/08/24 - Yorkshire Amateur vs Wombwell Town
At the start of the season the League Cup wasn't given much priority by the Wellers, and the defeat at Yorkshire Amateur certainly seemed to mean more to the hosts than the loss. The fans clearly weren't too bothered either as just 45 (mostly club officials) watched the game. Excuses aside, it was the Ammers who looked very lively with Noel Nfonkey's trickery out wide and Roy Fogarty's experience in attack causing all sorts of problems. On13 minutes the Ammers had the ball in the net, but it was clear the striker was offside as the flag eventually went up after a 20 yard run by himself. The Wellers came close on 22 minutes as Alfie Broughton's cross from the left found Josh Nodder in the box. Nodder's left footed volley around the keeper hit the right hand upright and under immense pressure Eddie Agnew could only steer the rebounded effort over the bar. Yorkshire Amateur took the lead on 28 minutes as Fogarty received the ball at his feet from a free-kick. With Rikki Paylor closely marking him, the forward was somehow able to turn, break free into the box and slot under Charlie Preston. Jason Paling came close to a quick equaliser two minutes later as his long range drive from outside the area was parried away to be collected by Jack Viles. Another scramble in the box came from a 37th minutes corner as Agnew headed against the chest of the defender at the near post and fired over by Broughton on the edge of the area. The games was eventually levelled a minutes before the break with Broughton involved once more. His combination with Kane Reece eventually saw the ball fall to Agnew who created some space and curled his effort from the corner of the penalty area over Viles and into the top left hand corner. YAFC 1, WTFC 1. The Wellers almost took the lead for the first time straight from kickoff as Broughton crossed from the left to Nodder. The initial shot was pushed away from goal by Viles to Gareth McDermott, who could only strike the rebound wide. A minute later and a bizarre bounce of the ball saw the hosts retake the lead. A skied effort in the penalty box looked to be going out for a goal kick, only to bounce back in play eluding both Paling and Paylor as it returned to the middle of the goal for Fogarty to hit home. A quadruple change from the Wellers just after the hour didn't bring much fortune as the visitors seemed to lack intensity in the pouring rain that joined the game during half time. Matters were made all the more difficult on 86 minutes as a soft shoulder to shoulder by Gadhafi Kiwanuka saw the Yorkshire Amateur player fall to the ground to win a free-kick. With players retreating a comment of "you fell for that one ref" by Jack Dando saw the defender sin binned for the remainder of the game. With half chances failing to cause any real trouble for the Yorkshire Amateur backline, it was they who progress to the next round. Yorkshire Amateur - 2 Roy Fogarty 28, 47 Wombwell Town - 1 Eddie Agnew 43 Attendance: 45.
