S&H Senior Cup QF - Game 31
18/02/25 - Wombwell Town vs Stocksbridge PS
With a reprieve in the S&H Senior Cup due to Maltby Main fielding an ineligible player, the Wellers faced opposition from two steps higher competitively for the first time. The Northern Premier League East Division side visited the Recreation Ground in pre-season, but it was obvious Stocksbridge weren't going to treat this one as a friendly. Despite a difference in quality representing the two sides, it was the Wellers who had the first big opportunity to score. A loose clearance found Eddie Agnew who had to shoot quickly to catch Ben Townsend out of his net, however the effort curled wide of the right hand post and out for a goal kick. In the tenth minute the Wellers conceded their first goal, and it came from a Stocksbridge corner, as Elliot Owen rose above everyone to head past Charlie Preston. The visitors doubled their lead just six minutes later as ball through the middle found Alex O'Connor with acres of space to pick his place and fire past the onrushing Preston into the roof of the net. A third goal pretty much put the game to bed as Harrison Poulter netted his frist for the Steels after a good move down the right hand side was delivered to the number nine in the area. Half Time: 0-3 Most of the good crowd of 183 were given hopes of a comeback as the Wellers tried to find way back in the second half. Two minutes in and Jack Wilson had a go from distance, but it was a comfortable catch in the end for Townsend. Wombwell Town did get a goal on 50 minutes with top scorer Jordan Kershaw heading home the back post following Charlie Rogerson's great delivery from the right wing. This got the crowd going, however a fourth goal just nine minutes later put an end to the contest as loanee Paul Iggulden headed past Preston. Owen Sykes got to show off his long throw skills to the crowd and one moment with twenty minutes remaining saw a redirected header cannon off the crossbar and a resulting goalmouth scramble wouldn't find its way into the Stocksbridge net. The visitors progress to face Hallam in the Semi-Finals, while the Wellers suffer their second defeat in the same competition this season and can now prepare for the remaining NCEL league fixtures! Wombwell Town - 1 Jordan Kershaw 50 Stocksbridge PS - 4 Elliot Owen 10 Alex O'Connor 16 Harrison Poulter 27 Paul Iggulden 59 Attendance: 183
