Sheff Senior Cup - Second Round
22/10/24 - Wombwell Town vs Elite AFC
The Wellers first foray in the Sheffield Senior Cup for the 24/25 season ended in a comfortable scoreline, but it wasn't without its scares along the way. The visitors came out strong and forced the Wellers midfield back in the opening exchanges, however a corner on eight minutes opened the scoring and set a new club record. Josh Nodder's corner was headed in by Eddie Agnew to mark his 58th goal for the club to make him the all-time goal scorer, surpassing Brad Kerr's record. Agnew extended the lead ten minutes later as he found himself in acres of space on the edge of the penalty area. Kane Reece stayed onside and played the ball through to the marksman who then beat archie Hurd once more. On 20 minutes Reece volleyed home from an Owen Sykes corner that was initially cleared off the line for his first goal of the season. Elite tried to make a comeback as the Wellers relaxed a little, but found Rikki Paylor and Sykes unbeatable at the back. The trademark missle throw by Sykes provided a fourth goal without reply as Jordan Kershaw was left unmarked in front of goal to head home his tenth goal of the season on 32 minutes. Charlie Preston was called into action two minutes later and got down low to deny the shot from the right, but with Sykes struggling to shake off an ankle injury, Cole Patrick did eventually beat the keeper on 37 minutes after play was switched from left to right. Sykes' injury meant he was replaced and this saw Alf Thompson return to first team action for the first time in seven months. WTFC 4, EAFC 1. The second half was a much quieter affair, but Nodder almost made it five on 49 minutes as he fired wide after collecting Danny Youel's corner on the edge of the penalty area. There was a slight chance of a comeback half way through the second period as Dec Richards reduced the difference to two. A well taken finish on the left of the penalty area beat Preston. The final sub for the Wellers saw Luke Norbury make his first appearance for the club since April 2023 when the club was still in the County Senior League. A final goal with seven minutes remaining was fitting as Agnew completed his hat-trick from a Nodder free-kick. Agnew reached the ball before anyone else and looped his header over the keeper and into the net where many Wellers supporters were standing. Wombwell Town - 5 Eddie Agnew 8, 18, 83 Kane Reece 20 Jordan Kershaw 32 Elite AFC - 2 Cole Patrick 37 Dec Richards 69 Attendance: 105.
