WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Sheffield Senior Cup - Third Round
27/11/24 - Maltby Main vs Wombwell Town

After a disappointing first 45 minutes, The Wellers gave themselves too much to do in the second half, despite giving hosts Maltby Main a scare towards the end.

The home side made good use and knowledge of their sloping pitch to catch the Wellers defence out early as Jordan Pilling's early effort was turned behind by Charlie Preston.

On 20 minutes the keeper was beaten for the first time as Ashley Flynn's speculative effort from distance found the net.

Flynn doubled the lead on 39 minutes after finding himself with the ball some 30 yards out and catching Preston off his line.

Heads down, a run into the penalty area by Steve Taylor saw the right back fend off a challenge by Jason Paling to lay the ball into the path of Wade Ripley who made it three without reply just two minutes later.

The half wasn't without it chances for Wombwell though and one another night one of two chances at 0-0 from debutante Liam Owen's free kick that found the keeper's face followed by Rikki Paylor's follow-up that was cleared off the line would have gone in.

Josh Nodder's effort across goal straight from kick off after the opening goal would have made a difference, had there not been a deflection to put it the wrong side of the post.

The second half saw the majority of possession go in Wombwell's favour as they searched for a goal to stage a comeback.

It took until a corner on 79 minutes by Danny Patterson to give them that hope. The ball into the middle of the penalty area was headed in by Owen Fieldsend for his first for the club.

Another goal just a minute later made it a nail biting finish. Danny Youel's initial shot from just inside the area seemed to be blocked, yet fired into the net at the same time. Substitute Nick Guest hitting the blocked shot past the unsighted keeper to make it 3-2.

Despite the late pressure and eight minutes of added time, the Wellers couldn't find a third to take the game to penalties, but the effort was there for all to see.
