Isuzu FA Vase - First Qualifying Round
23/08/24 - Wombwell Town vs Nostell MW
Wombwell Town's first ever venture into the FA Vase ended in victory as the early leaders in the NCEL Division One table put Nostell MW to the sword. The final score line didn't reflect Nostell's performance, especially in the opening period of the game where the visitors had several chances to score. Cyrus Rowe and Gracjan Klimczak both had opportunities to give Nostell the lead but their efforts went over the crossbar or wide of the target. There was an early booking for Nostell's Daniel Vinten on just five minutes as he pulled Eddie Agnew down from behind. Agnew had a soft landing on the defender. The opening goal of the game arrived on 11 minutes as Eddie Agnew became the first Wellers' player to score in the FA Vase. Agnew, the only player at the club to have appeared in the debut 18/19 season, took his goal well with a curling SHOT from just inside the penalty area after twisting the defence all out of shape. Nostell's Rowe came close to equalising on 18 minutes as his long-range drive from outside the box just in front of the visiting dugouts was pushed down low by Charlie Preston onto the post and out for a corner. Preston was involved again five minutes later as he chased the ball to the edge of the area and moved the ball away before kicking down low to clear. Nostell arms waved and comments were shouted for a handball outside the area, but referee Matt Rose waved away the furious appeals. As the ball came into the Nostell area on 26 minutes, keeper Ahsin Rashid made a clumsy foul to give the home side a penalty and it was no surprise when Gavin Allott stepped up and tucked home the spot kick for his tenth goal of the season. Things grew worse for Nostell on 34 minutes as a long punt up field by Preston was played on by Jack Wilson to visiting defender James Morris. With the ball under his control he passed by to Rashid who was stepping forward, only to miss his keeper and watch the ball go into the net instead. Usually we don't give own goals, but on this occasion we have no choice. It wasn't all good news for Wombwell as they were forced into two substitutions before half time. Jack Dando was replaced by debutante Charlie Rogerson on 35 minutes and Gav Allott made way for Alfie Broughton just three minutes later. With a 3-0 lead there was no need to keep them on and make their knocks worse. Broughton almost made an immediate impact on 40 minutes as the young winger tried to redirect a ball across the box towards goal. His effort found the base of the left hand post before being cleared. WTFC 3, NMW 0. Just like the first half Nostell came out at the start of the second 45 looking for a goal. With nothing to lose they tried an effort from outside the box that captain Rikki Paylor deflected over the crossbar. A fourth goal was denied by Rashid just before the hour as Kane Reece, Jordan Kershaw and Agnew worked their magic in the penalty area before the latter's volley was pushed over the bar. Nostell's night worsened on 69 minutes a late tackle on Alfie Broughton brought Vinten his second yellow card of the game and saw his team go down to ten men. Solly Limb, who had been a half time substitution, ended the game on the sidelines as he injured his ankle in front of the stand. He left the pitch on crutches and we wish him a speedy recovery. An injury to debutante Charlie Rogerson forced another substitute, with sub keeper Ethan Blatch coming on into the midfield (wearing 17 instead of the 13 he was given) for the final six minutes of the 90. An interesting way for the keeper to make his Wellers debut! Eddie Agnew had the final say on the game as he netted the Wellers' fourth and his 50th for the club with three minutes remaining. A cross from the right saw the forward fend off the defenders and chip the ball over the keeper who was on his line. It could have been a hat-trick too, but for Rashid, who saved a further effort by Agnew in added time following Connor Hodgson's set-up. Wombwell Town - 4 Eddie Agnew 11, 87 Gavin Allott 26 (pen) James Morris OG 34 Nostell MW - 0 Attendance: 144.
