Isuzu FA Vase - Second Qualifying Round
21/09/24 - Wombwell Town vs Ashton Athletic
Our North West Counties opponents had a bad day, which started on a coach from their Wigan based home to Wombwell with a 2 hour delay following an issue with the transport. The thirty minute delay to the game didn't help them, but it certainly didn't put the Wellers off their game as they came straight out into the attack. If not for Ashton Athletic keeper Joe Beswick any one of three chances would have found the net on eleven minutes. Beswick first denied Josh Nodder's acute angled shot, before reacting well to deny both Jordan Kershaw and Gavin Allott from close range. Two minutes later the pressure kept mounting as Allott struck the crossbar, followed by Danny Patterson's corner pushed away from the line by Beswick moments later. The next attack saw the keeper beaten as a trademark throw by Owen Sykes was flicked on by the head of Jack Dando to Kershaw's foot whose power volley found the net. Ashton had a little spell just after the half hour mark where a terrific defensive block in the area put the ball wide for a corner. WTFC 1, AAFC 0. The home side pressed once more in the second 45 as Allott had an early effort cleared off the line from a corner before Dando's header was put wide. The crossbar was rattling twice more in a seven minute spell, but a second goal could not be found. A relatively foul-free game changed on 62 minutes as captain Rikki Paylor was booked for a rugby-esc tackle, quickly followed by Ashton's Ethan Pearce joining him for a foul on Kershaw. Changes saw the introduction of debutante Cian Guest, recently signed from Parkgate, and Eddie Agnew - who is chasing the club's all-time goal scoring record. The game changed on 71 minutes as Pearce was judged to have fouled Nodder down the right hand side and having been shown a yellow just eight minutes earlier the second caution meant he was given his marching orders, much to the dismay of the Ashton fans who thought no contact was made. The resulting free-kick was delivered into the box by Sykes who found the free head of Agnew and everyone stood and watched as the ball curled into the net to double the lead. Ten minutes later Agnew grabbed his second of the game (now just five away from Brad Kerr's record) as he raced onto the end of a long ball up-field and lobbed the onrushing Beswick to secure Wombwell Town's place in the FA Vase First Round. Wombwell Town - 3 Jordan Kershaw 14 Eddie Agnew 72, 82 Ashton Athletic - 0 Attendance: 134.
