Isuzu FA Vase - Second Round
09/11/24 - Ashville vs Wombwell Town
Wombwell Town's exploits in their first FA Vase campaign saw them travel to North West Counties side Ashville for their first away game in the competition. It proved to be a close game between the two sides doing well in their respective step six leagues and it was the home side who went looking for a goal in the opening third of the game. On 15 minutes a curling effort by Josh Maldon had to be punched over the crossbar by returning keeper Charlie Preston and just a minute later a save low to his right hand post saw the shot pushed behind once more. From the corner a header at the left hand post by Tom Hewlett was headed behind by Danny Patterson, with calls for handball falling on uninterested ears. The Wellers grew into the game and on 21 minutes Kane Reece's snap shot from just inside the area narrowly went wide of Ruari McDaid's left hand post. A minute later there were calls of a penalty by the visitors as Gav Allott's flicked header fell into the path of Jordan Kershaw who went down in the area, but as the referee pondered on a decision, his assistant raised his flag for offside. The breakthrough came on the half hour after Rikki Paylor picked up the ball by the half way line and played a ball over the top to Allott. The striker then dragged his marked wide, before turning back and supplying the ball into the box for Kershaw to head into the top left corner from 12 yards. Deep into added time Ashville levelled as Lewis Moynes initial effort for parried away by Preston with Peter Morgan quick to react and get the rebound past the stricken keeper. AFC 1, WTFC 1. The Wellers had the better of the play at the start of the second half, with Reece coming close to restoring the lead on two occasions, the second, on the hour, punched away by the keeper. The lead was restored with 25 minutes of normal time remaining as Danny Patterson's right sided corner finding the head of Jack Dando in the middle of the box. With perfect accuracy the ball evaded everyone and found its way into the top left corner via a clip of the crossbar. There had been no bookings, or many free kicks, prior to the 73rd minute when Jack Wilson's ball winning tackle saw a reaction from the Ashville player. With Ashville captain Shaun Farrell screaming into the referee's ear it came as no surprise that he produced a straight red. The harsh treatment of Wombwell players by match officials continue. With ten men, Wombwell were forced back but it took until the 89th minute before Preston was forced into another save. More cries of a penalty as Preston punched the ball clear were waved away and Preston got back to his line to collect the low driven effort that lacked power. The ball was put into the net, but as the home side celebrated attention was finally brought to the referee of his assistant's flag. After a long discussion the correct decision of a free kick to Wombwell was given and soon after the final whistle blew.
