Isuzu FA Vase - Third Round
07/12/24 - Wombwell Town vs Hallam FC
With Storm Darragh causing havoc around much of the county, it was a miracle that our game against Hallam went ahead. A credit to the volunteers who helped fork the pitch, dry up standing water with towels, and get muddy in the process, for their hard work from noon onwards. Sadly, the efforts on the pitch couldn't be matched as Hallam adapted to the wet and very windy conditions, also showing that extra bit of skill. The wind affected game almost saw the visitors take the lead within a minute a bouncing ball over the home defence found Leon Howarth free to shoot across goal, but not beat the right hand post as the ball smacked the bottom and blew out for a goal kick. On 22 minutes the visitors took the lead through Brodie Litchfield who effort from the right wing deceived Charlie Preston and hit the side netting. Against the wind chances were few for the Wellers with their best effort arriving just before half time as Jordan Kershaw crossed from the right, causing Hallam keeper Hugo Warhurst to punch clear of the diving Eddie Agnew in the box. WTFC 0, HFC 1. Frank Lampard vs Germany. That Tottenham shot scooped out of the goal by Man United's Roy Carroll. Decisions not given that would have changed games. The Wellers had one of those moments eight minutes into the second half as a 40 yard screamer by Josh Nodder flew past Warhurst and smacked down off the crossbar. With the referee and assistant so far away there was no way they could judge whether the ball had crossed the line, and sadly the ball bounced away from goal after hitting the ground. Some said it crossed the line, some said it hadn't. It wasn't given, and the moment was gone. Just before the hour Hallam doubled their lead as Brandon Bradbury volleyed in from inside the penalty area. The game was all but over just four minutes later when Rio Allan scored on the rebound following a blocked shot after Hallam played the ball down the left wing. Calls for offside fell on deaf ears, but probably the correct decision. Allan had a chance to grab his second on 73 minutes after he was brought down in the area by the outstretched arm of a Weller, but his penalty clattered the crossbar and went behind. With ten minutes to go, a breakaway run saw Litchfield score his second of the afternoon and give the visitors an almost flattering result. The FA Vase adventure over for the Wellers after an incredible debut season in the competition. Wombwell Town - 0 Hallam - 4 Brodie Litchfield - 22, 80 Brandon Bradbury - 59 Rio Allan - 63 Attendance: 203.
