WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Emirates FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round
02/08/25 - Horbury Town vs Wombwell Town

The dream of playing in the Emirates FA Cup became a reality in this Extra Preliminary Round for both Horbury and Wombwell Town in an historic occasion for both clubs.

A bumper crowd at the Pulse Hire Ltd Stadium saw 260 in attendance with a good travelling support and best of all a large number of juniors from both teams playing their part.

As both teams were led out to the pitch with the youngsters as mascots, the feel of nervous tension and excitement was in the air on the comfortable (weather wise at least) summer's afternoon.

The opening stages of the game saw both teams size each other up, with neither troubling the other's goalkeepers, and as a result the best effort of the opening ten minutes fell to the hosts who fired a shot across the goalmouth and wide.

The Wellers best effort of the opening quarter of the game came on 18 minutes as captain Jack Dando headed over from a Morgan James corner.

Two substitutions were made before the break by the visitors, either side of the best of the game. Owen Sykes had to be replaced by Danny Youel on 37 minutes after pulling his groin following a tackle, and then Jason Paling was switched for debutante Josh McKay as the clock ticked to 45 minutes, in what could only be described as a preventative measure by the management.

The best chance of the half for either side fell to Wombwell Town in the 42nd minute as Jack Wilson, now at left back in Sykes' position, got forward and supplied a cross into the box where he found Callum Brooks at the far post. Brooks shot however, was cleared off the line by the desperate defender as keeper Paul Hagreen was caught out of position.

Half Time: 0-0

The second half was more of the same. Some half chances and substitutions from the visitors to try and find something different, but chances were few and far between, and despite this the game still had plenty of energy and entertainment.

Horbury will feel they could have done better with a dangerous free kick on 67 minutes, but for the dead-ball to be fired well wide of the target and failing to trouble Sebastian Malkowski.

The best chance of the second half fell to the Wellers on 73 minutes as a throw on the right found Jordan Kershaw who was able to spin on the ball and spot Wilson free on the left. The perfect ball set up Wilson, but his shot could only find the palms of Hagreen who parried the ball behind for a corner.

Hearts were in mouths three minutes into added time as Dando was judged to have trip a Horbury player just outside the penalty area, but once again the free-kick failed to trouble Malkowski.

Two minutes later a final freekick, this time for Wombwell, saw Brad Grayson's ball into the box deflected by Kershaw, but into the keeper's arms.

The draw means the two will meet again in a replay on Tuesday evening (5th August) where there must be a winner. Parkgate await a visit to the victors in the next round.
