Emirates FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round Replay
|
05/08/25 - Wombwell Town vs Horbury Town
With the game deadlocked in the first outing for both club's in the Emirates FA Cup, the replay gave Wombwell the chance to host and make use of home advantage. The club's first FA Cup tie on home soil started with a fortuitous opening goal after just three minutes as Jordan Kershaw pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area allowing him to move past Horbury keeper Paul Hagreen and slot into an empty net and take the accolade of being the first goal scorer for the club in the competition. Horbury were quick to try and equalise with Joel Feirn forcing a superb save by Sebba Malkowski on eight minutes, and a corner for the visitors ended with the second goal of the game. Not in Horbury's favour though as the clearance was played up field quickly and found Kershaw on the right edge of the area. The low cross found Nick Guest free to shoot, but with his first effort blocked by James Travis the ball fell to the onrushing Danny Youel who thundered the ball into the net to double the Wellers lead. A controversial moment came just before the half hour as James Cursworth and Jock Curran tussled in the penalty area with both going to ground. There were big shouts for a penalty, but referee Phillip Morton waved them away. Half Time: 2-0 It didn't get much better for Horbury in the second half and a third goal on 54 minutes diminished their chances of the comeback further. Nick Guest, starting his first game for the club and first since 2023 due to injury, latched onto a long ball down the right. His layoff to Jason Paling was played into the area for Guest to direct the ball past Hagreen's right hand and in off the post. A fourth goal came on 69 minutes with Jamal Stewart potentially getting the final touch, although its currently up for debate amongst the players. The goal came from a Jack Dando throw on the left. The ball evaded Hagreen up high and the final touch to direct the ball seemed to come from Stewart for his first goal for the club. Hopefully the video footage will clear up the issue. With the lead now large enough, the Wellers sat back and soaked up any pressure that came their way, but largely Malkowski was untroubled in a poor night for the visitors. Wombwell Town progress to the Preliminary Round where they host Parkgate on Saturday 16th August. Wombwell Town - 4 Jordan Kershaw 3 Danny Youel 17 Nick Guest 54 Jamal Stewart 69 Horbury Town - 0 None Attendance: 467
