WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round
16/08/25 - Wombwell Town vs Parkgate

The FA Cup adventure continued with the Preliminary Round against fellow NCEL Premier Division side Parkgate, who, in their last visit to the Recreation Ground, won the NCEL Division One title.

Much has changed since the teams last met at the end of the 23/24 season and following their defeat at Tadcaster midweek it was Wombwell Town who wanted to put things right and came out of the blocks looking for an early goal.

The early goal did arrive, and after seven minutes, the Wellers were in the lead thanks to a thunderous strike into the roof of the net by Jordan Kershaw. The build-up play was smooth with Jason Paling, making his 100th appearance for the club, linking up with Jamal Stewart down the right before a cross into the box saw a kind touch put the ball on a plate for Kershaw to finish.

In the replay of the last round two quick goals set the Wellers on their way and fans saw two quick goals once again against Parkgate. A corner on 15 minutes by Morgan James was at the perfect height for debutante Jack Steers to rise the highest and header past Sam Riches.

Ollie Fearon almost made it three just seven minutes later when he received the ball on the edge of the penalty area following Kershaw's pass, but the striker fired just wide with his shot across goal.

Half Time: 2-0

Scott Mason must have given his side some choice words at half time as it was a different Parkgate side that came out onto the pitch in the second half and they caught the hosts out by pulling a goal back early on.

Just four minutes into the second half Jacob Pearson was determined to get into the box on the ball and from the right hand side played the ball flat in front of goal to find Alex Wonham who tapped home.

With twenty minutes to go it was almost an instant impact by substitute Josh McKay who found himself free on the left to race past a tiring defence and fire towards goal, but the effort was straight at Riches who collected.

Supporters hoped of a third goal on 79 minutes as a half cleared free-kick by Sam Finlaw was played back into the box by Danny Youel. Captain Jack Dando went up with the keeper and the ball hit the keeper's hand onto Dando's head and went backwards into the net, only for the referee to give a foul on the keeper.

Looking for an equaliser Parkgate then went on the attack and Sebba Malkowski was called into action with nine minutes to go when he had to deny Harry Day with a leg save as the forward found space at the left of the penalty area.

One last chance for the visitors came after calls at the half way line in front of the dugout for hand ball were ignored and Parkgate went up field and fired across goal from a narrow angle.

Wombwell Town progress to the First Qualifying Round in their first season in the Emirates FA Cup and adds another moment to the club's history.
