14/10/25 - Wombwell Town vs Penistone Church
The first local derby between the two teams started in a frantic fashion with both sides creating chances. The Wellers couldn't find the back of the net early on with one of two debut men, Dan Hernandez, was denied first with Eddie Agnew's follow up shots blocked twice. Former Wombwell keeper Harry Ambler keeping them out as Ollie Fearon's effort was then put out for a corner. At the other end Luca Defalco found himself on the left of the penalty area, but could only find the side-netting from the narrowing angle. On six minutes the Wellers were on the attack again as Hernandez forced another save from Ambler that saw the ball rattle the crossbar and fall to Agnew who hit the rebound off Fearon and wide of the target. Hernandez looked bright in the first half and curled an effort around the post from San Finlaw's ball through to the new addition. Penistone were left scratching their heads on 16 minutes when a cross from the right found the head of a team mate at the far post, with the resulting effort curling just wide of the right hand post. It would have been a rare goal for Jason Paling on 27 minutes as he put the ball into the net, only to see the flag go up for offside as the cross from the left found Agnew in an offside position as the striker headed on to the marauding right wing. Just after the half hour Zak Cottle's header found Hernandez on the left edge of the penalty area, where he squeezed through two players into the box and fired a shot just over the bar. Half Time: Wombwell Town 0, Penistone Church 0 The Wellers went on the attack once more in the opening six minutes of the second half, with the best effort falling to Fearon from a superb ball forward by captain Jack Dando to find the striker, but the volley flew over the crossbar. A goal came three minutes before the hour as a move down the right by the visitors saw a cross into the box that Sebba Malkowski collected, but somehow dropped to the feet of Kieran Ryan who was gifted a tap-in. The lead didn't last long though and two minutes later Fearon's use of his chest and foot put the ball in the path of Eddie Agnew who waited for the bounce and volleyed over the advancing Ambler into the net from outside the penalty area for a spectacular equaliser. With the game level again both sides seemed to settle for a point, but the game was almost won deep into added time from a Wellers corner. The ball into the six-yard box saw Jack Steers close range effort blocked on the line with Fearon's final chance deflected out for a corner that was never to be taken.
