21/10/25 - Golcar United vs Wombwell Town
A misty rain was present at the Wellers arrived at Golcar United as they returned to league action following an FA Vase defeat. Lloyd Allinson replaced the injured Sebba Malkowski in goal, while Liam Owen returned to start a second spell with the club. The home side, off the back of a 6-0 win over Frickley Athletic, started brightly and it took just nine minutes for them to find the back of the net. A cross from the left wing evaded the defence to find Callum Petch who had a second to set himself and fire low past Allinson. Double the time and the hosts could have been two nil up but for a superb fingertip save from the debut keeper to redirect a curling effort from distance over the crossbar. Eventually, the Wellers started to make some headway going forward and after Liam Owen's cross drifted just wide of the post on 34 minutes it was Golcar keeper Harry Stead who came up big. Nick Guest was played into the penalty area and his perfect shot was stopped by the fingertips of the on-rushing keeper. Half Time: Golcar United 1, Wombwell Town 0 In the second half it was all about Wombwell who came out with determination and the bit between their teeth. As a result the equaliser was found just before the hour as Jordan Kershaw carried the ball across the edge of the box to find space, but had to find Jason Paling on the right touchline. Paling's cross into the heart of the penalty wasn't dealt with and there was Owen to connect and thunder the ball past Stead. Owen nearly gave his new team the lead just three minutes later as he saw Stead off his line, but the cheeky effort in search of a second curled just wide of the post. It was deja vu for Guest as the game moved into the final twenty minutes as he was put through into the penalty area once again, only to be denied by the hand of Stead once again. The striker couldn't believe he had been denied again. A turning point of the game came on 73 minutes when Zak Cottle looked to take the ball down the right flank only to be wiped out by a dangerously high challenge by Daniel Naidole. The referee only thought a yellow card was appropriate as Golcar were lucky to keep eleven men on the pitch. Luck had truly run out for the Wellers with ten minutes to go as Rhys Walwyn-Alsop shielded the ball on the edge his penalty area before being pushed down onto the ball from behind. Somehow the referee didn't give the foul and instead pointed to the spot for handball. George Doyle stepped up and despite Allinson diving the correct way, the venom on the ball put it into the net to restore their lead. There were no complaints in added time when a foul was committed in the area out of desperation and Doyle dispatched his second penalty to seal the points.
