Macron NCEL Premier Division - Game 17

01/11/25 - Knaresborough Town vs Wombwell Town
The end of a turbulent October ended with a win, and the start of a fresh month saw a point taken in our first game. Overall, the game was fairly even but it was the Wellers who produced some good chances at the beginning of the match, which eventually saw them take the lead. After seven minutes Eddie Agnew was put through on goal by Sam Finlaw and the striker's run into the box saw his effort stopped by the outstretched foot of keeper Edd Hall. The opening goal came on the quarter hour mark following another save by Hall. Jason Paling's right wing cross found the head of Jordan Kershaw, who was denied by the keeper's hand down at the right hand post and put behind for a corner. From the corner Jack Steers rose higher than William Lenehan to head towards goal and find the net. Knaresborough had chances to equalise before the break with Lloyd Allinson thanking a combination of the woodwark, his defence and wayward shooting to deny the hosts. The best chance for the home side came with ten minutes of the half remaining as they countered down the left. There looked to be a foul off the ball on Agnew from a late challenge by Lenehan, but play continued which allowed an eventual lob of Allinson to hit the post and rebound away to safety. Half Time: Knaresborough Town 0, Wombwell Town 1. The second half saw chances far and few between, but the Wellers thought they had doubled the lead with twenty minutes remaining as Paling found the net. Liam Owen's cross to the far post from the left found the wing back free to put the ball into the net, however the keeper - desperately trying to reach the ball - collided with the Paling as the ball travelled to the net and somehow a foul was given on the keeper. With the hosts trying to find the equaliser it left gaps at the back and on 88 minutes Kershaw was released on the counter. The striker, looking for his first goal since the 9th September, carried the ball into the box and forced Hall into another save that resulted in a corner. Heading into added time Knaresborough started ringing alarm bells with a cross from the left that was headed back across goal and wide before disaster. Two minutes into added time Lenehan fouled Agnew which lead to both players squaring up to each other. A booking apiece followed and somehow a free-kick to Knaresborough. From the free kick the ball forward saw Jack Dando nudge the mark he was marking. Another free kick and a costly one. The ball into the box was headed in off the crossbar by captain Dan Thirkell to deny the Wellers their first league away win of the season. They say things level out over a season, but we're yet to see it! Knaresborough Town - 1 Dan Thirkell 90+4 Wombwell Town - 1 Jack Steers 15 Attendance: 139
