13/12/25 - Wombwell Town vs Liversedge
Against the league leaders who haven't lost a league game since the 6th August, the Wellers knew it would be a difficult afternoon to try and kick-start their season. With recent postponements and new signings the squad included a whole host of new players with Alex Kemp, Harvey Scott and Chin Osadebe starting for their debut, Will Hunter and 16 year-old Ethan Gornall making theirs from the bench, and the return of Ollie Fearon and Alf Thompson after time away from the club. As a result it took a while for the newly assembled players to find their feet and rhythm and the visitors took advantage early, just like they did in the reverse fixture. Kelan Swales, a thorn in the side in that reverse fixture, scored twice in the opening 15 minutes. His first came after six minutes as he received the ball on the right and skipped past Kenneth Effah who slipped on the sticky surface and side-stepped Zak Cottle to reach the penalty area before firing a shot across goal to beat Luke Chadwick with a goal of good quality. Swales' second came from a 15th minute corner that found the attacking man on the edge of the area. His strike took a deflection that some fans claimed was a handball, but the deflection wrong-footed Chadwick to double Liversedge's lead. Josh Waldram had the first big chance for the Wellers two minutes later as the midfielder tried his luck from distance trying to get his team firing. Despite holding the lead Liversedge resorted to some unnecessary tackles that saw Osadebe kicked up into the air, Fearon flattened, and it took an elbow to the face of Kemp before the referee produced a yellow card. Two minutes before the break another foul outside the penalty area produced the best chance for the Wellers as Morgan James' free-kick was pushed away from the bottom corner by Joseph Wild. The second half didn't produce any more goals, however Osadebe did show more glimpses of what fans can expect to see from the forward and a good turn in the box three minutes in saw his shot deflected up into the air and cleared off the line from Fearon's follow-up header. With a quarter of an hour remaining Waldram tried his luck again with a snapshot from 25 yards, but the effort skewed wide of the goal following the build-up play between Fearon and Osadebe. Debuts for Hunter and Gornall from the bench saw both get into the action in the final third, but despite some creativity the chances on goal did not come. Despite the final score there were positives taken and there was a feeling that it is only a matter of time before more points are picked up!
