28/02/26 - Wombwell Town vs Barton Town
The high-flying swans of Barton Town came looking for three points to help in their push for the play-offs and a quick start gave them an early edge in this encounter. Two goals in the opening eight minutes stunned the crowd, but in truth over the rest of the game it belonged to the Wellers who left the pitch thinking they should have taken something from the game. The opening goal came in the fifth minute as a cross from the right wing found the unmarked head of Joel Shepard who re-directed the ball into the net. Keeper Kyle Wass did his best to get across goal, but couldn’t place his hand correctly to stop the bullet header. Just three minutes later the lead was doubled as Barton’s top scorer, Lewis Stephens, headed in his 17 league goal of the season after the ball was floated in from left back Will Sutton. Home side heads didn’t drop and Wombwell Town were back in the game on 12 minutes as a corner on the dugout side was headed in by James Byford who netted his first for the club in just his second appearance. Captain Jack Wilson clipped the top of the crossbar from an effort at the edge of the area five minutes later as the Wellers continued to put pressure on the visitors goal. Josh Lake, finding his feet at this level, had two chances around the half hour mark with the second forcing a save down at the left hand post by Barton keeper Charlie Dixon-Brown. A blow came on 35 minutes as a counter attack from the Swans saw Ali Aydemir break through the middle of the defence and slot past the onrushing Wass to make it 3-1. The end of the first half saw more chances for the Wellers as Lake fired wide and Danny Youel finding the woodwork deep in added time following another dangerous corner. Owen Birks was introduced at half time following his return to the club from neighbours Worsbrough and his long throws created a number of chances. Lake was trying desperately to get on the scoresheet with efforts over the bar on 52 minutes and another with twenty to go as he volleyed into the keeper’s arms. Barton didn’t produce much going forward in the second half, but Wass made one save down at his right hand post with ten minutes remaining to deny the visitors a fourth. Substitute Ant Mackie had a point blank effort parried on 82 minutes and the rebound was scrambled behind for yet another corner. Despite their struggles this season The Wellers have restored some pride in recent matches and look to continue their efforts for the remainder of a disappointing season.
