WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Macron NCEL Premier Division Game 3
19/08/25 - Liversedge vs Wombwell Town

A third away game in a row in the league saw The Wellers come away with nothing to show after a bad start to the game set the tone for the majority of the game.

Relegated last season, Liversedge have started well in the new campaign and Kelan Swales scored two in a minute at the beginning of the half to give them a comfortable advantage.

It could have been different after two minutes as Jamal Stewart turns on the ball in the penalty area but failed to give Jordan Porter any work as the shot fired high over the crossbar.

Mere seconds later the hosts were on the attack as Swales used his pace to break past Jack Dando and beat Sebba Malkowski down to his right hand post.

Home fans were still celebrating as the lead was doubled. Swales found himself on the left of the penalty and twisted past both Dando and Jack Steers to then find the net in the opposite corner.

Wombwell never got to grips with the pace and skill of Liversedge and could have been further behind had it not be for a number of saves by Malkowski and several missed opportunities.

A third goal was disallowed on 14 minutes as the ball went into the net from a corner, but the referee had blown his whistle for a push as the ball was driven high into the box.

Josh McKay made his first start for the Wellers, but it wasn't a happy one as he was withdrawn through injury after just 19 minutes, and things grew worse just before the half hour mark as Liversedge were awarded a penalty. George Green stepped up and converted with a shot straight down the middle.

The best chance of the game for the visitors fell to Stewart on 35 minutes as a Danny Youel cross from the right found the striker in the box to allow a volleyed shot at goal. Porter was positioned well to stop the shot and collect the rebound.

Half Time: 3-0

Liversedge played a more conservative game in the second half, but there were only half chances for Wombwell as they struggled to create opportunities in front of goal.

Callum Brooks, Judah Smith and Charlie Rogerson all came on during the second half to add some life to the team, but there was no way back.

Knocks to Stewart saw the striker replaced for the final sub, before Sam Finlaw twisted his knee and left him hobbling on the right wing for the final ten minutes, while Jason Paling later landed awkwardly and twisted his ankle.

The right back had to go off, leaving the Wellers with ten men on the pitch for the remainder of the game and just like at Tadcaster under the same circumstances, the hosts added another in added time.

Antony Brown was the recipient of the ball after possession was lost and the ball squared to him and all he had to do was put the ball into the net with Malkowski stranded.

The fourth and final goal sunk Wombwell Town to their heaviest ever league defeat, but it didn't deter the Wellers faithful from supporting their team, especially the three young lads behind the goal.
