Macron NCEL Premier Division - Game 4
|
23/08/25 - Wombwell Town vs Parkgate
Seven days after their FA Cup encounter it was a case of history of repeating itself in the league game. While there wasn't a goal in the opening seven minutes, supporters only had to wait just another two before the same man got the breakthrough for the Wellers. Still goal-less it was Parkgate who forced the first save of the game as Sebastian Malkowski got down low to his left to save and concede a corner. The first corner was deflected over the crossbar to prevent a goal, before the second was collected by the keeper. Jordan Kershaw made it 1-0 with a neat finish across goal after receiving the ball from a Jamal Stewart ball after the striker won the ball just outside the penalty area. Oli Robinson, a new addition to the squad from Pontefract Collieries, offered a lot on the right wing with his pace and trickery on the ball, and his efforts were rewarded by being in the right place on 29 minutes. A free-kick by Danny Youel was fired straight at Sam Riches, but the keeper could only parry the ball to Robinson who placed his low drive under the keeper and in. Another free-kick, this time by Sam Finlaw, whistled past the post just seven minutes later before another effort went unrewarded as a skyward kick by Riches was collected in the area by Kershaw who played the ball across to Youel, only to see the header go wide. Half Time: 2-0 With the score the same as it was at half time in the FA Cup the pushback by Parkgate was the same in this league match, as they visitors came close on 56 minutes when they hit the crossbar and then won a corner. The referee, Ellis Douglas, has no choice but to give captain Jack Dando his marching orders on his 50th appearance ten minutes later as the defender bundled over the attacker in the box to also concede a penalty. Alex Wonham, who scored in the FA Cup like Kershaw, scored from the penalty spot to make the game 2-1 once again. The game then became a scrappy affair with the Wellers stretched, but still looking to hit Parkgate on the counter attack. Wombwell substitute Eddie Agnew had a drive for from range collected by the keeper on 86 minutes, as Parkgate failed get any big chances of their own until the dying seconds. With 90+3 on the clock a cross from the left was half cleared, but the resulting shot went high and out of the ground to preserve the Wellers first three points of the season. Wombwell Town - 2 Jordan Kershaw 9 Oli Robinson 29 Parkgate - 1 Alex Wonham 66 Attendance: 223
