02/09/25 - Wombwell Town vs Campion
The familiar pattern of home matches for the Wellers continued against Campion during their first visit to the Recreation Ground. Two of the previous three matches saw Wombwell Town take a two goal lead into half time only to have the number cut in the second half. After a quiet start where Campion had the best effort denied by Sebba Malkowski down at his left hand post, it was brought to life on 25 minutes. A corner on the right hand side by Morgan James was whipped into the area above everyone as the ball smacked against the top right corner of the frame of the goal and was then cleared away. It was a spark of life that was ignited two minutes later as a penalty was awarded to the home side. A ball into the box was flicked on by Ollie Fearon and hit the arm on Ben Bodle which saw referee Liam Marsh award the spot kick. Jordan Kershaw had a penalty saved on the opening day, but there was nothing Luke Wilson could do to stop the marksman netting his 41st goal for the club. Kershaw almost made it two on 37 minutes after he cut inside from the right and made it into the penalty area before firing over the crossbar. As the game headed into added time Ollie Fearon, back up front after a game in central defence, showed his composure as he carried the ball into the box down the right and beat Wilson with a well placed effort into the far corner. Half Time: 2-0 The second half slowly became a battle as Campion became more desperate to get back into the game and both teams seemed to be getting frustrated by some of the decisions. One particularly curious incident came just after the hour mark as Eddie Agnew took a shove to the back which kept the striker down for several minutes, but no free-kick came as Campion went up field to try and find a goal. Despite trying to continue, Agnew went down again following a corner just three minutes later and was replaced by Nick Guest. Agnew's replacement could have made it three nil just two minutes into his return as Guest found himself in acres of space with just the keeper to beat. Kershaw's run into the penalty area saw the striker opt to square a pass to Jack Wilson who followed suit to find Guest. Unfortunately, the striker hesitated one-on-one with Wilson and his shot went wide of the goal. The visitors finally got a goal back in the 90th minute as a free kick from the left was put in by Jamie Allsop with virtually their first effort on target in the second period. Substitutes Jamal Stewart and Guest linked up shortly after to try and restore the two-goal lead with the latter forcing a save down at the left hand post. After that holding the ball in the corner was the order for the rest of the game so the Wellers picked up the three points Wombwell Town - 2 Jordan Kershaw 28 Ollie Fearon 45 Campion - 1 Jamie Allsop 90 Attendance: 144
