09/09/25 - Wombwell Town vs Bottesford Town
23 seconds. That was the official time of the first goal as Wombwell Town scored with their first attack of the evening. It came so quickly that the build up became a blur, but is certain is that Ollie Fearon was able to strike into the keeper's bottom left corner while he stood still unable to react to the speediness of the goal. The early goal lead to a frantic opening period of the game with Bottesford Town pressing to find an equaliser that caused Sebba Malkowski to be called into action after five minutes as he palmed an effort by Luke Ayris wide of his left hand post. The resulting corner saw a fortunate save by the keeper that deflected off some part of his body onto the right hand post and behind once more. On 12 minutes the lead was doubled as some sustained pressure from the Wellers paid off as the ball was half cleared to Morgan James in the penalty area and an awkward looking volley worked and founds its way over the crowd and in off the crossbar. It was almost three two minutes later as Nick Guest controlled the ball with his chest and volleyed wide from distance, but the striker did get on the scoresheet with 20 minutes gone. Jordan Kershaw's run down the right saw a cross floated over everybody to find Guest beyond the right hand post. Bottesford's keeper, James Leverton, almost fouled the striker but was left on the ground as Guest turned away and fired past the covering defender on the line. Despite the poor conceding of goals from the visitors, they deserved to have something to show for their efforts and they managed to get on the scoresheet on 32 minutes as Scott Matthews carried the ball from the halfway line without anyone closing him down. This allowed Matthews time to place his shot across goal, beating the outstretched hand of Malkowski to get a goal back. With six minutes remaining the gap could have been closed even further when a cross from the left wing was tracked by Malkowski and the first-time shot was denied by the keeper. A minutes before half time the lead could have been restored to three goals when Jack Dando's header was cleared off the line at the other end. Half Time: 3-1 The second half saw just as much pace as the first, but became more frantic and desperate, with the visitors committing more fouls as the game progressed. Two bookings in five minutes was a warning to the Bottesford players, especially as one came for substitute Adam Portitt, who had replaced a team mate just a minutes before who received the first booking. The Wellers gave a debut to recent signing Max Eastwood from Worksop Town and the youngster had brief moments to show his skill and determination while on the pitch. It was the visitors though who produced more in front of goal during the second half with Malkowski saving on the line from a corner and then able to deflect an effort from the second corner wide as well. He could nothing about the Bottesford goal on 73 minutes as Jake Brown curled an effort into the top corner, using the defence as a screen to give Malkowski no time to react. Bottesford kept pressing for an equaliser as it reached the 90th minute a foul on Eddie Agnew in the penalty area lead to the penalty that sealed the points. Up stepped Kershaw who sent the keeper the wrong way and supporters beathed a sigh of relief.
