WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Macron NCEL Premier Division - Game 8
09/09/25 - Wombwell Town vs Sheffield FC

As nil nils go this was anything but a boring one. It was a game where Wombwell Town had to battle to gain the point and one where Sheffield FC will feel they could have done more to claim all three.

It was a fairly even affair in the opening 15 minutes with both teams trying to carve out chances at both ends with Wellers' Ollie Fearon coming the closest with a header straight into the keeper's hands.

A foul on Jack Steers on the quarter hour mark saw the centre back also take a knock to the head and despite trying to continue he was replaced two minutes later by Morgan James, pushing midfielder Jack Wilson into the back four.

This blow encouraged the visitors and they were left scratching their heads on 21 minutes as they broke down the right. The cross into the box found Brandon Webster unmarked with the whole goal to aim for, but the header went wide of the target.

A second let-off for the Wellers came just two minutes later as Will Portman latched onto a long ball over the top, but fired against the crossbar after being closed down by keeper Sebba Malkowski and cleared away for a corner.

Then a controversial moment with a straight red shown on 29 minutes to Wombwell. Debutante Kieran Mortimer fouled his man at the half way line and before the whistle went he kicked the ball. Cue half a dozen Sheffield players race to the referee, a quick discussion with his assistant and Mortimer was shown a red for an apparent kick to the head of the fouled Sheffield player - who didn't require any treatment.

With what feels like the World against them in recent weeks it left striker Fearon join Wilson in the centre back positions for the rest of the game.

Despite losing a man it the Wellers who had big chances before the break via Sam Finlaw's long range drive and Nick Guest's effort that forced a big save to keep the game level.

Half Time: 0-0

For the home side, it was a case of contain the opposition in the second half and for the majority of the 45 Sheffield were stifled and couldn't get many efforts on goal.

The visitors biggest chance came with a quarter of an hour to go as an odd bounce eluded Malkowski and left the ball loose in the area, but as the striker came in so did James who got ahead of the player and reached the ball first, and despite the shouts for a penalty the referee waved the claims away.

A long range effort with three minutes to go bounced wide of the right hand post as a bit of late pressure came, but Sheffield could not find a way through as the Wellers earned a point to keep their unbeaten home form going.
