WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Macron NCEL Premier Division - Game 9
17/09/25 - Handsworth vs Wombwell Town

Football can be cruel sometimes and the late twist to this game left one team jubilant and the other heartbroken.

The game was a good advert for Macron NCEL football with both teams attacking and playing in the right manner throughout.

For Wombwell Town their first opportunity came on 12 minutes when Ollie Fearon fired across the face of the goalmouth. It was a sign to Handsworth to be wary of the striker, but six minutes later they were left stunned.

A defensive error left debut (and returning) keeper James Pollard stranded as Fearon lobbed the keeper with venom from about 22 yards out.

The lead lasted until the 29th minutes when the only bit of controversy saw Handsworth equalise. A ball into the box found Mitchell Dunne, who looked to have controlled its movement with his arms to place the ball where he wanted it and struck low past Sebba Malkowski with appeals going up all around the ground. A case of one person not seeing the handball, and that one person being the referee.

As the break approached the home side took the lead for the first time following a free kick on the left wing. The ball into the box was initially shot against the post by Scott Ruthven and the rebound wasn't cleared before Brandon Bagley redirected towards goal and watched the ball squirm past two players and under the body of Malkowski who just coundn't get down low enough.

Half Time: 2-1

A half time substitution saw Jordan Kershaw replaced by Jamal Stewart through injury and the change seemed to have a positive effect straight away.

Just three minutes in the Wellers were level with the goal coming from a familiar source. An Owen Sykes throw on the right was played short (for him) to the back post where Jack Steers met the ball and headed past Pollard.

Pollard was called into action just after the hour as Nick Guest found his way into the box despite calls for a foul from some Handsworth players and the striker, trying to find the bottom right corner, was denied by the palm of the keeper.

Max Eastwood's introduction added pace down the right and it was this advantage that saw the youngster carry the ball into the area on the goal line on 76 minutes and play in Stewart who rattled the crossbar with little room for error with the keeper making himself big.

It looked like a fair point was going to be shared when the Wellers went on one final attack. Eastwood, in a similar position to 15 minutes earlier, couldn't find a team mate this time and the clearance was played down Handsworth left wing. The crowd could feel what was coming and the cross found Ruthven who slotted home the winning goal to deny Wombwell their first points on the road this season.
