WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Isuzu FA Vase - First Round
18/10/25 - Winsford United vs Wombwell Town

Wombwell Town's first game in this season's FA Vase saw a trip to Midlands League side Winsford United, however with cup-tied players and injuries the list of missing players was in double figures.

The game started brightly for the Wellers who found themselves on the attack soon after kick off. Eddie Agnew was first denied before Ollie Fearon's follow-up shot was deflected wide for a corner.

Both teams seemed to cancel each other out in the first half, but Winsford gained momentum attacking down the slight slope and forced a first save from Sebba Malkowski on the half hour as the keeper got down to his left hand post to push the ball behind.

The only goal of the game came five minutes later as a failed advantage saw the home side attack with a ball down the left. Calls for offside didn't see the flag raised and a low cross from the left by Oliver Poper deceived Malkowski and found Oliver McDonough who didn't miss, despite being under some pressure.

Half Time: Winsford United 1, Wombwell Town 0

Looking for an equaliser, it was the Wellers who went on the early attack again in the second half with some good passing eventually saw Sam Finlaw floating the ball into the box that Agnew headed over.

Winsford had a great opportunity to double the lead on 58 minutes as a slight touch by Jack Steers saw the opposition player fall to the ground and win a penalty, however Malkowski read the spot kick well and got down to his left to save the penalty with a strong hand that put the ball out for a throw in.

After the penalty was taken a substitution for the Wellers saw Ant Mackie take to the pitch for the first time since late January 2024 where he sustained an ACL injury. Playing left wing-back, Mackie did well in what was a big moment for him.

Malkowski kept his side in the game once more on 71 minutes as he denied Winsford from a corner, before Jacob Kirwan produced a big save at the other end two minutes later.

Following a corner, the ball was whipped into the box by Jack Wilson that the keeper came for and missed, only to get back up and palm the headed by Steers over the crossbar to deny a certain goal.

The pressure came onto Wombwell once more as the game headed towards added time as a cross into the box found the striker free, only for his effort to be blocked by Danny Burns and deflected over the crossbar.

Five minutes into added time Wombwell had one last corner to find an equaliser and take the game to penalties. Everyone was up for the corner, including Malkowski, but the ball was cleared and in desperation Malkowski went to win the ball back. Committing a foul according to the referee, Malkowski was given a harsh red card.
