WOMBWELL TOWN F.C.
Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup - Round Two
28/10/25 - Athersley Rec vs Wombwell Town

A long overdue win finally came the Wellers way as they progressed in the Senior Cup, taking several monkeys off their back in the process.

Since the victory on 9th September, 11 games had come and gone without tasting success again, but the Senior Cup gave Wombwell Town the chance to gain confidence and belief again, and did so against determined local rivals Athersley Recreation.

It didn't matter that the hosts were a division below, the gap isn't that great, a win was all that mattered and with that win a first away victory of the season came too.

The Wellers played good football for the most part and created their first opportunity after five minutes as Eddie Agnew's pass through to Nick Guest saw the striker force a save from Rec keeper Paul Diamond.

A lull in the game came until the 25th minute as the home side pushed forward, but were denied by an incredible save by Lloyd Allinson who somehow managed to push the close range effort up into the air and behind with quick reactions.

The deadlock was broken by the Wellers with possession down the right wing and a series of passes finally giving Tommy Needham the space to deliver the ball into the box on 33 minutes. There was Guest at the near post to react and with one touch find the bottom corner.

A penalty was awarded on 41 minutes as Guest was fouled just inside the area, however the spot kick by Liam Owen is one he won't want to repeat as the score stayed the same.

As half time approached Athersley Rec equalised as a ball into the box seemed to be stuck in the area as defenders tried to clear, until James Woodhouse put the ball into the bottom right corner.

Half Time: Athersley Rec 1, Wombwell Town 1

Desperate for the win, Wombwell came out in the second half looking for that important second goal to restore the lead and similarly to the first half it was Agnew who fed in Guest to create the first chance of the half, but once again Diamond was equal to it at his right hand post.

More chances came as Needham set up Sam Finlaw whose effort was deflected wide for a corner, followed by a free-kick from Owen who found the wrong side of the netting from 23 yards.

As both sides did their best to get forward it was the combination of Agnew and Guest that saw the eventual winning goal come with less than ten minutes remaining. The touch on by Agnew found Guest free in the penalty area and his finish gave the keeper no chance as the ball pinged down and in off the crossbar.

There was one last chance for the home side as they battled the ball off Jack Dando with a push from behind, but the resulting effort curled wide of the goal.

You could feel the relief of the Wellers players after the second goal, but more so at full time with hopes of a more fruitful November just around the corner!
